I don't think it can be done from anywhere. You have to be within render distance of the enderio block.

A rather easy early-game power source is the enderio photovoltaic cell. It doesn't give much power but you can make a few and get enough to get some basic RF based machines going.

More people should move to EnderIO cables. I think they work much better and offer more functionality at that.

A reactor from Big Reactor can easily get 20K RF/tick and more. If you go with ReactorCraft then you can go even more.

How did you measure that? I didn't notice any lag related to them. In fact I have two bases and the base where the rotary craft boring machines are located is a lot faster then the other :-)
