Yeah man, you must be having a hardware conflict or something. That should NOT be happening.
Win 8.1 is just amazing performance wise on my machine. I saw a massive increase in almost every category. My video renders went from 45 minutes on a 20 minute video to just over 20 minutes. Win 8 is optimized for Multi Core machines and makes use of the full power of the computer. So the issues you are having are very strange, I have NEVER had a crash period.

^^ As an engineer, I definitely appreciate all the hard work that goes into it, but seriously, this is all been done before by other games? IIRC, when Quake was getting built, Carmack roped in Abrash to help optimise the game back then. (Basically, if you're getting overwhelmed, there is no shame in getting help to tide over things) IIRC, Mojang got some "uncle bob" to help them with code refactoring recently. I still get the impression much needs to be done with the codebase itself before it purrs consistently on all machines. And, no, just because my machine doesn't run run Minecraft 1.7.x well, does not mean it is a "toaster"! So there.

uh, quick question, what did you mean "dropped openGL support" in that post back there.

Hastily worded. There's OpenGL support, otherwise it won't run on *NIX platforms. They've actually dropped advanced openGL support due to a combination of reasons. You'll find some discussion here on the forums on it as well. But, here's a link on reddit discussing it. While a lot of them on that thread said it did help their game performance, searge tweeted that they have indeed pulled the plug on it (shame!). It was easier for the developers this way, but it is not any easier on players.

Has anyone else been having glitch issues with 1.8? This morning I updated and started playing single player and found I couldn't adjust the chunk render distance without the graphics going spastic in-game. Then just now, I tried joining the Hive mini-games server and got booted for 'suspected hacking' because I glitched-out and got stuck in the middle of a game.
Feels like the 1.6.4-to-1.7.2 update all over again -.-

As far as I can tell, I think it's been replaced by the new culling algorithm.

I hate schadenfreude. But forgive me this one time, while I post this snarky message :(

Yes. My whole gripe is that whatever it is that they are doing, doesn't seem to be working for me (and others?) in terms of any performance gain, while the earlier option did help me out (me as well as many others, as seen on my earlier link.)

this blog has a good post on the topic

on AOGL:
This works for some GPUs (desktop Nvidia variants, primarily) but unfortunately it isn’t half as good as it sounds like: apart from the fact that rendering a lot more cubes is even slower, GPUs are inherently asynchronous.
That is, your GPU, at any time, lags from 1 to 3 frames behind what the CPU is doing right now.
So, without a lot of careful fiddling, rendering those hulls and reading back the result in the same frame can stall the GPU forcing it to stop and wait for the CPU.

I've never really moved to 1.7 it's too buggy for me
so I'll be moving from 1.6 straight to 1.8 as soon as most of the mods have updated

^^ An average of 60fps for vanilla MC on an overclocked celeron? By this logic, a default i3 processor should offer decent/equivalent performance before OC. But it does not. Minecraft performance monitoring is getting so bizarre, it's not even making sense any more.

As an aside, how are you cooling that rig, @Vasa?[DOUBLEPOST=1409710447][/DOUBLEPOST]

^^ Anecdotally, my experience is the same as this. :([DOUBLEPOST=1409710613][/DOUBLEPOST]

Indeed, and optifine continues to be a bit of a lottery. It works sometimes, but mod interactions actually make the overall (individual) game experience fluctuate wildly (and poorly) many a time.
i am using stock cooler.

I've got a quad core and the "speed up" is negligible.
I only note that at NON-multicore processor like Celeron impossible see better performence for 1.8. Will you see better performance for multicore case is different question ;)
For example, I see it for my I7 quad core. But Minecraft still CPU and memory hungry game with low usage GPU side features.

ey my celeron is dualcore.!

on AOGL:

Yes, I know of those two posts. @Hambeau linked them in the previous page. I am not going to contest the thinking or the theory behind the move, it is likely to be sound and placed on good intentions. The old cliche "The difference between theory and practice is greater in practice than in theory" comes to mind, because whatever their intention was, it is not bearing out in practice for a lot of us here who are complaining about the poor performance of newer releases of MC.

IKR?
But there's gotta be something going hella wrong for it to crash playing TF2... LOL

Sorry, thought your original reply was for me [DOUBLEPOST=1409754804][/DOUBLEPOST]

I think the blog referred to this... They considered going to OpenGL 3.0 for software improvements but that would've forced a lot of people to have to upgrade video cards.

Like I mentioned earlier to @midi_sec, I am not questioning the move, but I am just sore about the fact that I haven't really seen any result in my game from all this (hard) work. Since Mojang had "uncle bob" drop into their offices recently for code refactoring training, the whole thing is still a big WIP. I just want to squeeze in an hour and play the game in the odd evenings that I possibly can. Instead, it's countless hours of fiddling, 20 minutes of play before memory leak forces me to close my client, and basically just endless frustration at my end lately. :(

Did someone do a survey on how many are actually getting an improvement\decrease in performance?
