Doing so would require more than a passing interest in mods by Mojang. I believe they've made it clear (repeatedly) that they have zero concern for our struggle.

I know, and I downright hate their "blow hot, blow cold" attitude towards mods. In the same conversation with Carmack, when Carmack brought the mods into picture (to save face?), notch acknowledged outright that he owes it to the mods for making his game what it is today (I paraphrase), and once the conversation moved favourably to mods, even direwolf20 chimed into the twiiter discussion. People better than me in tweet searching can actually look up this whole conversation.

There is some kind of cognitive dissonance, both in Mojang and among the modders that Mojang hires as its game devs. The modders get noticed by Mojang because of their popularity within the MC community! For Mojang it is a great deal because these people are so familiar with the MC codebase already, and need no training before becoming productive. It's cynical, but it's practical (It's happened before too. Deathmatch tournament bot coders were employed by the respective game companies, for example). After moving into Mojang HQ, many of them actually take vocal "don't care about mods anymore" stance too, rather than sensitise the bosses about being receptive to mods!

Definitely not ready to quit 1.6.4. Why would I when all the best mods are as stable as they are going to be for a long long while? Ive been through this a few times and it always seems I end up skipping a version. I am definitely looking forward to increased view distance and mipmaps. Optifine offered those features and used to be one of my favorite mods but it hasnt worked right in 1.6.4 from the get go. When enough mods get on board the 1.8 train or whatever comes after that, I will probably be there too.

I have the same feelings about 1.7 as you sir. I've just gotten my friends hooked on 1.6.4 modded, and don't want to push them into the "new" unstable mods at this time. I figure, by the time 1.7 evens out, we (my friends and I) will be ready to move on, and the 1.8 stuff will not be far on the horizon.

Hear, hear. Unlike some folks, I am still far from ready to declare 1.6 "dead"...

Regarding Mojang, it just boggles the mind how they can continue to suppose that the popularity of modding isn't driving sales. I would have moved on long ago if not for modding.

But they already have your money. If you go by just Reddit, vanilla has 408,275 subscribers. FTB has 19,780. Vanilla has the vastly larger user base. Period. Also, a LOT of vanilla players look down on mods.

Wait, if you're skipping a version, which are you talking about? 1.7.10 or 1.8? The thread is about 1.8...so if you move straight to that, you've already skipped a version.

Fair enough, they do have my money, but I have brought a fair number of friends to MC who wouldn't be playing without mods, and I have bought several gift licenses in doing so. I can't compete with 408,000 Redditors, but Direwolf20 can at 414,809. ;) Unless he has a lot of followers who really just don't like mods and would prefer to play vanilla, hehe. If a single Youtuber covering nothing but modded Minecraft has that many regular viewers, I would be paying some serious attention to those network effects if it were my ship to run.

I agree that 1.6.4 isn't going anywhere, and will probably be played for years to come just like 1.2.5 and 1.4.7. Sometimes we hit a nice spot and get one of those versions where all the mods settle and it has a good feel. I think 1.6.4 is one of those. That's why I fixed it for Java 8.

I got bored of my custom 1.7.10 pack, so lately for me it's just been vanilla 1.8 (both playing and tinkering with), along with some 1.6.4 Crash Landing at times when I want mods. As long as we've got interesting packs like that, I'll still be playin' it.

It's easy to say that, but mod users are (debatably) more active. There's always something new to learn and test.

Saw you dropped that fix... nicely done! How are you liking 1.8?
Thanks. And ironically it was my work on 1.8 lately that allowed for creating the fix so easily.

I like 1.8 overall. I think there's bugs which it shouldn't have shipped with, and I basically have my server running in a loop script because of crashes at least once or twice a day. But I don't believe I have any qualms with it gameplay-wise. Depends on who you ask though I guess, some people seem to really dislike the enchanting changes and stuff. I'm fine with it.

There are less modded users but I'd say that the average modded user is more dedicated to the game and more active than the average vanilla user. There's parts of vanilla like this too, such as the resource pack community, too. Point is: with the last two updates, Mojang effectively pissed off ALL of its dedicated communities.

I.8 is pretty marginal in terms of quality though. I have nearly all of the 1.8 content via Gany's Mods and Botania. That's not funny, that's just pathetic.

I'd say that vanilla does have mods and updates/new things. It's just that they have had one major "You may want to start a new world" update, and now they are focusing on stuff that is less visible, but important to make future updates.

Hmm ...

Major vanilla updates: 1.3 (internal server), 1.5 (redstone), 1.7 (new world).
Major modded versons: 1.2, 1.4, 1.6.

Pattern?

That isn't enough anymore, because it's questionable that whatever they're doing to improve future updates is even working. If it was, that wouldn't be a problem. These are the paid devs of one of the most successful games in recent history, and with that level of experience and funding I expect far more polished material than the piles of crap we call 1.7 and 1.8.

1.8's situation could change and maybe it will be hugely successful, but it's still fixing problems that should have never existed.

Not Kansas
I doubt anyone has to worry about modded 1.8 until the beginning of 2015. If not MCP then Forge. If not Forge, then crucial mods like NEI that are just plain difficult to play without.

The general rule of modded minecraft: you will always be at least one vanilla version behind.
