All this OS Support discussion is driving me crazy. Will we have our alerts when the new forums happen or not?! Going slowly sane here guys, throw me a frickin' bone!

I'm just not being fake with you guys. I know that right now I can't commit to doing a native linux client, so I'm telling you that. I'm actually very interested trying to make a case to support Linux, but right now I know I don't have enough ammo to make it. Help me get it. :)

Since you have to quantify in order to make your case I would suggest making a poll that would ask a series of questions. For instance, "Would you like to see a linux/mac client?", "Do you run minecraft via Windows? Mac? Linux?", "Do you own a Private Server?" "Roughly how many people play in your server" Essentially we can narrow down (to a point) the affect this would have on the community. If you really do want to make a case (good or bad) then this is one way to do it. We can even advertise the poll on other forums, etc. Just my 2 cents.

Yes I understand that, and other os support is very important to Slow and myself. However, lets just put it to rest with other os's not officially falling under "feature parity". Because there is no way anyone can grantee that there WILL be a full feature complete linux or mac client at launch or the near future if it does not make proper business sense.

Fair enough! Personally I don't like this answer, but I will accept it. Mostly it was the uncertainty and confusion that was getting to me.

Hopefully we'll still have an API, though. Or something.

On another note, I don't really remember if this has already been answered before, but with the new client, would we be able to build and/or publish modpacks from the client itself? I'm thinking, for example, I create a new instance, download mods, test them, adjust configs, etc. and then when I'm done close minecraft and then maybe have a button or something in the client that says "make this instance a modpack" or whatever, and it would grab the list of mods and the configs.

... maybe that should be a separate tool, now that I think about it. Would be nice though if the platform could support something like that.

IIRC, and Lex will probably slap me if I'm wrong, everything dev related will be handled through the dev site (curseforge.) My understanding is this will also include mod packs and resource packs as well because these are considered dev. The client and the curse site are for players to acquire the packs, mods, etc.

Editing because I see Lex above asking for talk on other issues not revolving around linux. Seeing how big this single issue is to so many, asking for it to be sidelined is like the President asking us to sideline talk on employment/education/war/economy/etc and if we could please get other points on what color to paint the Oval office: Eggshell, bone, or Ivory.

We have 8 pages addressing the Linux issue. It has been stated repeatedly that "Something will be done just no one is sure exactly what yet" Y'll aren't going to get more of an answer on Linux support right now. So continuing to harp on it is essentially beating a dead rotting horse.

On the other hand it appears based on this thread that every one is happy with the partnership and no one has any concerns to address except Linux users which would mean 98% of the community is cool with this (sarcasm)

What Lex and others are saying is we get it, something will be done, we don't know what it will be... lets move on to other concerns until we have more information on the Linux solution ... unless of course there are no other concerns.

Y'all are asking very specific questions about what exactly will be available in a client that hasn't even been started being written yet. Technically at this point the following description is as accurate as any other we could give:

"The new Curse Client will run your appliances, make you coffee, do laundry and wake you up in the morning with a serenade of your favorite song. It will allow you to code minecraft mods on the fly inside the game. You will be able to teach it to create modpacks the way you want. It will natively support photoshop and gimp plugins for creating texture packs in games. And it will be delivered to your house and installed on your computer by a purple unicorn with ruby shoes."

Curse, Forge and FTB are currently discussing what needs to be implemented. What extra features the modpack team wants. What features the texturepack support needs to provide etc etc. Then Kaelten will take that info and go to his programmers and go "ok guys how crazy is this.." the programmers will overturn some options suggest other options send it back, FTB etc will go over it again tweak and send it back to the programmers and once we have reached a point where the programmers believe it is doable and all teams are satisfied... then and only then will anyone be able to tell you specifics.

There also wasn't much indication of what to do about mod distribution permissions. Even Jaded had the wrong impression, apparently:

ummm no I was not. That was an example of the types of things that might be available not a statement that all of those would be available.[DOUBLEPOST=1395280391][/DOUBLEPOST]

THe funny thing is I can't find the post about us supposedly not using xen-foro because its buried somewhere in the OS discussions.

Does... does this mean we won't have alerts on the new forums?

Honestly I have no idea. I have not been told anything about changing forum software. And if the global moderators have a say in it we will be sticking with Xen-foro. There are some nice new features in the next version that we want. So ummm @Kaelten and @Captainnana ... forum software?

Awesome. I'ma be super nice and imagine sending you a fez and bowtie from ThinkGeek if I had the cash or knew where to send it too.

Pipe dreams...

But seriously, my hat collection thus far has been lacking. I need a Fez. Fezzes are cool.

I have to say, I also like XenForo a lot better than the MCF, on a number of levels.

I often see the MCF derping and causing topics to get corrupted in their code... tema had it happen to his extra utilities topic this week and lost alot of information and links

I'm working on getting more analytics. Unfortunately polls like that don't really work well on the internet because you're getting answers from a sampling of people who are willing to take the time to fill out the survey. There's an inherent selection bias.

Can it do my dishes and yard work too? Please!?!?!

On to Forum Concerns, YAY!

The current plan is to migrate FTB forums into Cobalt powered forums at some point in the relatively distant future that hasn't been finalized yet. A few points about these.
  • Cobalt is NOT the software powering MinecraftForum.
  • Cobalt is an in-house developed platform
  • Cobalt is the base for many of our largest sites, including MTGSalvation and Marriland
  • Cobalt and it's forums are highly customizable
  • Cobalt is fast rendering in as little as 5-15 ms on many pages.
  • Cobalt does have a pretty sophisticated notification system
There's a lot more that I could go on about it. But the important thing to note is that we'll work on customizing the software so that even @Jadedcat will be ok with moving the forums. There will absolutely be testing done before hand, and we'll have a beta version of the forum up for feedback before we even attempt to schedule the final migration date. There is also integration bonuses to having them part of the same platform, like mod or pack specific forums being reasonably possible.

I also want to make sure that you guys know that moving the forums to the new software will not change how they're organized, ran or moderated. That would stay 100% with the FTB Forum team.

My Main concern is how will the MODPacks be distributed. I also noticed Thaumcraft 4.1 wasn't on Curse either.

That system and workflow is still being spec'd out. I'm going to be working with @Jadedcat and @Eyamaz to figure that out. Once we have more details we'll be posting them. I do know that some of our goals include smaller downloads for updates, and improved experience for both end users and mod pack creators. Hopefully making it more accessible to everyone.

The most important question:
Will cobalt work on mobile? Both in-browsers like safari AND tapatalk?
