Silk touch without actually needing to mine: The 1.5.1 Minefactory Reloaded Mining laser outputs ore blocks for a few hundred MJ a tick.

MFR now has a mining laser?!?!?!?!?!!?!??!?!!!! I really have to look into making my own 1.5 pack, asap.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. You point it at a straight-shot hole to bedrock, then every few 10k MJ, you get an ore! Any ore. It's actually pretty neat, I think. Can't wait to build one!

What the fuck? Mining laser is in .1.4.7 man.. And as far as i know, it's Ic2 stuff :/[DOUBLEPOST=1368273943][/DOUBLEPOST]Ok, we may be talking about different things.. what im losing here?

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Does anyone else use a destruction catalyst?

Creeper shard+hunters backpack(s) (+miners backpacks+coin of fortune+silk touch).

About 10-15mins of mining, bag of decent ores and my inv isn't clogged with cobble/junk

And someone was left with this under his house

So does it actually dig then? Or does it just generate the ores out of thin air+power while sitting on a very deep hole?

They're different things ;) I don't know much about it either, but I just went through a change log of the MFR beta builds and it does indeed have a mining laser mentioned. So in the future we'll have 2 mining lasers, but probably with very different uses/mechanics (from the sound of it the MFR laser is a stationary block, not a tool).

Not my favorite way to see an auto miner (sounds more like an ore generator to me), but it does solve some issues and essentially does the same as any other miner.

I mean look at it this way: What, in essence, does an auto miner do? It takes power and produces ores (and junk and leaves a giant hole in the ground).

The issues it solves:
1) not much need for a chunkloader as you can have this near your base (Frames bores and the likes need to have chunkloaders because they'll be far from your base at some point)
2) it doesn't make your world enormous by drilling into unexplored chunks
3) will no doubt be better for performance than any other auto miner (and potentially even less than manual mining)

I don't know if it can also randomly generate stuff like cobble/gravel/etc. but that kind of junk can easily be used to almost perfectly simulate the output of an average auto miner. Though if it only generates ores you can think it just filters out all the junk. All that really matters is the energy vs ore production ratio.

One downside I see is that it obviously won't look as cool as a "real" mining machine, but then again most of us will only see those auto miners if they need maintenance of some kind. Another downside will probably be that it won't generate things like Rock Bees and other valuables you can find underground that aren't strictly ores.

Umm. I just think that miner is supposed to mine and make holes in the ground. Or under the ground. Any other machines may generate ores, but those are not miners, they are mass fabricators. The main difference between miners and mass fabricators is that miners usually take less energy but require maintainance, moving and so on. However, massfabs, are just put down, supply tons of energy, get stuff. So this machine is a massfab actually.

Lemming is planning on putting one in too. It's also ~750k MJ per ore. More expensive than a massfab IIRC(energy wise) but less expensive than matterfab.

We don't have much details on how to use the MFR Laser Drill.

Powercrystals commented that it just needed line of site to bedrock and power to the precharging lasers. He also mentioned a discount up to 20% on the power usage depending on the Y level. My base is floating over a swamp, so i decided to give it a try and dug a hole to bedrock.

It is an ore generator rather than doing any actual mining. But I think it is a good end-game MJ power sink, which I think many have asked for...

I timed it a little bit. At 400 MJ/t it made 1 diamond ore every 2 minutes, so pulverized about 1 diamond a minute. I did not time all the others, but lets just say at 400 MJ/t it was making redstone, lapis, coal in quantities I will not use... this is probably due to the favorable pulverizer recipes. It also makes AE quartz and nether quarts in low volumes, but enough to expand an AE system without worry. Gold and Iron were good rate well.

The recipe for the smasher block wasn't showing for me, it is supposed to crush ores with fortune like output, so will pair with the laser well.

The main beam is flammable even when unpowered. It will destoy things if you throw something in it or light you on fire if you stand in it.

I think the laser is using the beacon animation (never made a beacon, so not sure):

That's about 96000 MJ per diamond ore for anyone wondering.

Meh. One lava bucket costs 20K Mj.
Also, do you have to dig the hole by yourself? 'cause that's kinda... weird for a mining laser...

Yes and it's not a mining laser; it's a deep ore miner. It pulls ore out of the "deep earth" aka the things that are normally below bedrock in real life instead of "the void"

Missing a zero?
Isn't it 400mj/t * 20 ticks = 8000 MJ a second * 120 seconds = 960,000 MJ per diamond ore (but you also get the others ores as well during those 2 minutes with that energy).

I know, but if in can mine through the bedrock, that's pretty hard, why can't in just destroy stuff by itself? I mean, that's not hard - there is a mining well that does exactly the same thing, but it's just weird...

Yeah I was lol. glad you caught that. I pay too little attention.[DOUBLEPOST=1368293109][/DOUBLEPOST]

I'm sure there are numerous ways to validate why it doesn't that I am ignorant of but meh. It's just something to do.
