I just use a minimap with mob radar. Then creepers cant sneak up on me. Problem solved.

The farm can also take pollen which you get from butterflys and possibly other sources. Since the farm cant plant pollen, it works great as a filler. Encase your tree farm in glass and you will eventually get butterflies spawning.
