I have the same feeling. I don't tend to focus on mods when I play. I tend to try to immerse in the world and use whatever tool I can find to accomplish my goal. That's why I also don't really have favorite mods.

I got a significant (around 10%) speed increase playing Minecraft when switching from windows to linux (same computer). Note that Minecraft is not GPU heavy so gpu driver issues are typically not an issue. When playing with shaders the situation may be different though
