GregTech Has Gone Too far

2 planks from each wood was the basic nerf that Mdyio fixed back to 4 planks from 1 wood, so that you did not need to make GT machines to get back to 4 planks from 1 wood again.

I beleave the basic thing that irked Mdyio was forcing the use of a machine to get back to basic vanilla recipes.

& for me It showed some balls if you like from Mdyio to approach GT & his fan base to search for a solution to this issue.

I kinda think he saw Thermal Expansion's bug with sawmills reduce wood planks from 6 to 4 and he thought "WOW! Great idea, now that machine is in line with my machine, I just need to reduce vanilla planks from 4 to 2 and he doesn't need to fix his bug!"

At least that's what I thought when I saw the change. :)

Greg took umbrage with the change to his own change. He called it a hack to his own code and decided that it justified his game crashing retaliation.

But seriously let's forget who is right and wrong or opinions on that for a moment. A mod author that contributes to a trusted mod pack has entered malicious code into a public release version of his mod. Think about that. Only DIY updates would have felt this, but Greg just set a precedent that he will release malware on a whim. That is the real issue here.

His justification for releasing a game crash code is irrelevant. He's not to be trusted. There's no way to defend it. This decision on his part needs to be addressed. If you can't trust the code that is released, which is supposed to be universally trusted, then protection must be given to the players.

Even RG has come out on twitter with comments to say he is less than happy with these events, I beleave this is the start of something bigger, the GT v tinkers is resolved for now, but this this attitude of if you edit my recipes & I'll will crash the game beggers belief, there may come a day when the modders may just round on greg as a unit, atm there fighting there own little corner of GT v them.

I got that part, I just wondered if there's any real reasoning behind adding the wood 'nerf' in the first place. I mean, all his sawmill did was copy yet another TE feature anyway.

100% agree on this one. What's next; delete the world file and then blame the other mod author? It proves he's nuts and you don't want to run code (that can do ANYTHING on your machine) given to you by someone who's nuts.[DOUBLEPOST=1374066138][/DOUBLEPOST]

I think it's more than likely he's going the way of Better Than Wolves: greg and his happy little group of GT fans versus "the rest". If you look in that GT thread you see a whole bunch of people defending what he did "because the wood nerf is configurable". It's just painful to see some of the people there to jump through hoops to defend something that's just purely malicious and not even punishes the perceived source of the problem but instead punishes the user.

yes I know & found it sickening the for want of a better term ass kissing, I am glad to see that some of the better know FTBers are showing some restraint now too.

But lets look at it logically, if you surround your self with yes men how can you have a balanced out look, no matter what you do ppl will praise it, I do not know greg personally nor do I wish to but he seems to be intelligent so why can he not see a basic flaw like this, most modders have egos thats a gimme & I am totally fine with that, but this has to stop some place, just when & where & with what fall out is the question.
 
I still can't get over how he put in code to intentionally crash the game. At what point did he think "Yeah, crashing their game is a great idea!!!!!"? What sane person would think that was a good idea? And why does he think he can just get away with it? Never mind that it didn't affect me personally, gregtech is now software with a history of being malicious and I won't ever have it on my computer.

I'd be interested to know what Slowpoke & FTB think of GTs shenanigans but I expect them to maybe go a different way about resolving this (maybe talking to GT & mDiyo). Without FTB GT is pretty much going to slump back into IC2 non-existence and I'd expect any other mod pack will most likely follow suit if FTB did drop GT.

Maybe that would be the kick up the backside GT needs to stop fcking about, because I pretty much guarantee if players were to choose between GT and TC, that TC would win almost everytime.

GT and mdiyo already resolved it and most likely 99.9% of minecraft players didn't even experience the crash. Sure, the .1% might go up in arms and make a huge campaign to kill GT, but is that really what you want... less mods?
 
i have a question regarding the tool change. on the screenshot i saw, there was 9/26 on the bottom of NEI as well as arrows over the top for cycling mod crafting recipes. this forum tends to jump to conclusions on halfass information and repeat it as truth, so im curious what the other recipes are, and if the vanilla recipes are still there. you simply cant trust this forum for impartial information on GT since many seem to have made it their identity to slam the mod every chance they get like its politics red vs blue or something stupid. in the same vein, the IC2 forums arent a good unbiased source of info either. can someone who isnt foaming at the mouth outline the exact details from a release candidate non-pre-alpha build and not get sensational or try to sell a stance? is that too much to ask?

the wood issue and crash shitstorm are another point entirely and i think theyre rediculous, but thats another issue. id like to just ensure the tool information is clear and concise either so we dont get ignorant ad nauseum spam like forestry bronze or advanced solars for the next 4 months.

LOL, don't make me wade through that thread again. IIRC it was his belief that the wood to planks ratio was overpowered and that he was "fixing" it.

Also I saw that there was a "Pumpkin of Shame" added to mDiyo in particular if he used GT. From what I saw it used code to apply a pumpkin and a label to the player somehow. It takes changing 42 configs to disable it, but would only work for client side. In SMP the pumpkin would still be visible. This is even more evidence not to trust this guy.

mDiyo showed a level of maturity in calling a cease fire. It only protects the players by doing so, but projecting white knight status onto him is not my intention. The fact remains that Greg has shown that he doesn't care about the players. He doesn't care how convoluted his configs become. Greg explained how he went about maligning his code and feels justified in doing so. You can't defend that thought process.

its not about mods quantity, but quality. if mods quality doesnt match to other, why keep that mod?

without GT, there is not much left in IC2 to be bothered with. UE mods have almost every aspect of IC2 covered, but with better style, and i`m sure missing bits will come together later .

if you ask me, i`d like to see a ftb ultimate with UE instead of IC2&GT

Seriously though: we moved from Ultimate to DW20 a while ago and you really don't 'miss' GT and you really can still make good use of IC2. I think that how much GT adds to IC2 is wildly overstated: the only 'thing' in his pack that needs the advanced stuff is the fusion reactor and what actually 'needs' a fusion reactor? Nothing! All the stuff he added in the last year or so are just Gregified (expensive, time consuming) versions of things that mods like TE added before him. Aside from that, the stuff he actually does add he hardly documents.

I think GT caters toward a certain playstyle: one where the mod author sets your goal and you spend a substantial amount of time to reach those goals. It's as grindy as your generic Korean MMO. So what he did is set a point for 'endgame' (the fusion reactor) and now he's just adding to the time it takes to reach that end-game by just adding more and more in-between steps. So he's not adding more to the end of the chain, he's adding more 'chain' in between.

The two main problems seem to be that:
- He doesn't actually play his own game. The guy obviously likes programming more than playing the stuff he created.
- His own community is a bunch of self-sustaining yes-men that discourages any form of constructive criticism.

It really is a shame though, he could've created an awesome mod if he didn't get so obsessed with copying other stuff.

Wääh wääh you dumbs, I still don't get it. Since all of you hate GT and Greg himself so freaking much, why in the name of God are you using the mod? All the modpacks are freely editable for your own likeness, so you can juse REMOVE GT and there will be no longer need to whine, cry and have "serious discussion" (<- Lol, like any of the GT hatin/lovin threads would be) on the forums. I don't like the fact that Greg implements a crash inducing piece of code, but I still like his mod. It's still one of the better (in my opinion, MY OPINION NOT YOURS) mods in the modpacks, and I will continue using it. I even like most of the nerfs and whatnot.
