Why Vanilla hoppers fail in 6 words: "I didn't mean to drop that!"

Open topped blocks that suck items in with potentially horrible consequences, not a good idea. Or have we not learned from the TC3 crucible? :/

Just don't leave hoppers open topped when you use them with processes that blindly destroy items. Of course, thats only a concern with like, one machine.[DOUBLEPOST=1366741254][/DOUBLEPOST]

GT translocators can be used to do a similar function. Can someone who has used both compare them in terms of transfer speed and "reaction" time?

GT translocators are slow. Very slow. And require power.

Vanilla hoppers are faster than buildcraft hoppers.

GT translocators on AdvancingCraft are terrible. They go to sleep for long periods of time, don't consistently output to non-GC-item inventories, and have a very slow flow rate. Supposedly the delay is 10 seconds, but in practice we see 30s lag times.

Hoppers definitely do not have this restriction, but their maximum draw rate is only a few items every second. Their push rate seems to be faster, but it's not as fast (observationally) as Thermal Expansion's push rate.

Yeah, they pull from inventories about as fast as a redstone engine that isn't fully warm, definitely slower than an autarchic gate. They drop items extremely fast though.

Still, they're powered wooden pipes, obsidian pipes, and a holding inventory all wrapped up in a single block.[DOUBLEPOST=1366741659][/DOUBLEPOST]

Seriously? You can't conceive of a crucible below where you're remodeling, ending up with crap aspects in it that you have to release into the atmosphere because you're not far enough along in TC3? For anyone? Anywhere? Ever? Or mistakenly dropping in things? Again, for anyone, anywhere, ever? And you think they fixed it when that is the core mechanic? Pft.

Hint: They don't do that without water in them. So first time it happens, oh well bad things happen. The second time is on you, you shouldn't refill it when remodelling the ceiling.

Ah, so if I'm moving several stacks of items, GT might still be faster overall. Good to know.

I never had any problems with it not wanting to output into anything, but I've not really used them with anything non-standard. In fact, ever since that change and with autarchic gates being awesome, and with automatic machines of GT, I haven't really used the GT translocators and co. anymore.

This is a really weird and specific set of events. I can see that'd be bad, but in the same way that mixing IC2 voltages is supposed to be "bad."

This is specifically a feature and Thaumcraft specifically makes sure things don't get too out of hand if you do this. It actually has a limiter on how much flux can enter the environment in one tick from a crucible. You can actually measure this even without decompiling the code. So this problem looms larger in your mind than in the code; a fortuitous outcome.

I think it is a good mechanic. I also think it's less problematic with hoppers than with the crucible. Are you under the mistaken impression that the only way to put things into hoppers is to throw things at them them? Because this is not true. Also, Minecraft 1.5.1 has a lot more features for manipulating entities now; droppers eject as entities and hoppers and hopper carts collect entities. So we definitely want these features.

Yeah vanilla hoppers are amazing. They're almost category killers. If they could attach in any direction for their input inventory I'd almost feel guilty using them.

And we haven't even discussed the new pressure paltes in conjunction with hopper carts and vanilla minecarts. They are very good and very cheap.

For TC3 crucible safety: warded glass (or any) block above the crucible with magic mirror on the underside, paired magic mirror on the wall above your resources - insert items using the mirror.

I like it because it's fun, it also stops me dropping stuff in or stepping on it and melting my big toe!

you could even think of them as a replacement for obsidian pipes, I personally have a lot of ideas I intend testing out, atm testing ars + tinkers, will get to eb & forestry later tonight.

Yeah but the sorting system aspect is still under development. It isn't even like, you know, done yet. People are still figuring out how to make it more compact and useful.

Hoppers, one of the reasons I want that 1.5 update asap! Not to mention all the cool stuff TE, MFR, MPS and quite a few other mods have gotten between their versions in Ultimate and now.

My question is what to do with overflow. Say using an enderchest that is linked to a quarry. That is a lot of items and how much can a vanilla hopper do before it is omgfull.

An enderchest linked to a quarry is not a lot of items at all, because you void pipe all the cobble and dirt and stuff before it gets anywhere near your enderchest.

Fun game: use water conveyors over hoppers that filter out cobble. It'll look cool.

Putting a dropper on top of a quarry results in a nice orderly stream of items popping out to one side. MFR and water conveyors handle it nicely.

I agree but also depends on set up. What if you want the cobble for something, I know crazy but some people may want it. Or you have the void pipe after the hopper?

No one who wants the cobble needs it ever. And you'd have the hopper push it into a dropper next to lava. This is as cheap as void piping for the server and client, and very very inexpensive.
