Open source genetics for minecraft?

Bees, butterflies, trees, fish, ...

Maybe add in a concept of chromosomes? Forestry has several traits, each of which can be chosen randomly; that's like (as I understand it) chromosomes where there is a 50% chance of crossover after each trait, while in real life crossover happens once or twice per chromosome, so genes on the same chromosome (especially near each other) are likely to be copied together -- so trying to breed out trait one while keeping trait 2 is difficult.

i was thinking today and i had another idea. mob dye. not just for sheep or dog collars, but any mob. for instance how cool would it be to have a blue creeper running around in a cage or a purple zombie. better yet, a purple cat or a white bird from the promised lands. just a thought.

I think a NEI/WAILA addon displaying protection/durability values of diferent armor pieces would be really helpful.
With so many different armors it's not easy to know what armor is best in relation to its cost at each stage of the game...

Of course this could not be possible for protection-customizable armors like MPS but yes for most of the armors in the game.

Universal trader

You can craft an universal trader out of any single item or block by placing them in a U shape (like cauldrons) but with the center filled as well. It will work with anything but the efficiency will vary from 1:10 for the cappiest material to 1:2 from diamond blocks or such.

The trader can receive items and will convert them into a milky rainbow sparling liquid called "pix" according to it's efficiency. The trader will be compatible with the NEI "?" button or any item you set in the second slot. It will then act like an automatic crafting table instead it will use pix instead of material to craft items (again according to his own efficiency). Allowing you to trade everything.

The Utrader will remember the last 2-3 trades you did in it and will improve the efficiency (up to double) if you keep using the same trades in the same trader. This will favor players who build insteresting production chains. Specially if they need import something as well. But it will also create the need for a bigger machines with lots of pipes and pumps to distribute correctly the pix between many specialised Utraders.

You: Oh Iluvalar, that thing already existed. It was called a transmutation tablet from EE. And It was a mess because players were constantly finding new way to abuse of it !

Me: Don't worry, I have a solution for that. At the start and end of the game, and maybe via a button in the trader GUI. The mod will send an HTTP request to a remote server. Making a repport about what you bought, what you sold and what mod pack you're in. The server would run a simplified economical model and return you the prices of each items¹.

This way, if you found an abuse and start bying blaze rods in mass and sell blaze powders in mass, the prices would adapt to your new trick. Blaze rods would become more expensive and blaze powder cheaper. Until you find a new equilibrium where you can't abuse of the bargain anymore. Those imbalance instead of being the desmise of the mod would just be a funny aspect of it.

Why it would be so great
This trader would allow us to break loose from the narrow path we all are actually forced to go to find our ressources. You don't want to mine iron ? You prefer to build a big plot of carrots this time ? Go for it ! You prefer to make yourself a bow and go hunting ? Go ! You want to explore the world and find some elusive magic plants ? Yeah go ! You want to startup a dirt factory ? Hell you gonna have to be good at it, but you can if you really really want ! :D

We'll also be able to use the ressources around our base much more efficiently. I live in a swamp ? I can gather extra clay and sell my excess slime balls. I live in a jungle ? I have woods and cocoa bean for everyone ! I live in a desert ? I have cactus, sand and blaze powder to gather. The other way around, nobody would have to run around like an idiot during a 3 day walk to find a green dye, a single slime ball or a cookie because they are unlucky enough to have no relevant biome around their base. Unless you enjoy running around all the places in search of rare stuff... In which case you'd never had to stop exploring again :D !

Everybody will do stuff that they like in the mods and won't be forced to do all the tedious other bit every games. We'd go much more creative and I'm convinced it would be great.

¹ As far as my knowledge of PHP and webhosting goes, it wouldn't be more expensive to maintain then a single page of forum everyday per player. I think it's totally manageable.

So something like an open database for Buildcraft blueprints?
so after watching direwolfs new spotlight on buildcraft this is exactly what i want but also to be able to build by hand

This seems like a good idea, inspired by the pixel economy of Starbound. So just call the material fluidized pixels, and instead of a constant HTTP connection (which is abusable) adjust prices locally. I do think this idea needs some reworking before it's ready to be made. We really do need an alternate form of UU matter.

So you sell items through the trader/pixelizer and get pixels, then you put your pixels in 3D printers that use power and pixels to make things. The economy simulation can run in the background, increasing the value of rarely-sold items (to some maximum degree; why would dirt or cobblestone be rare?) and decreasing the value of commonly-printed items (down to minimum levels if necessary). It would necessarily be tracking the values of every item in the game in number of pixels needed to make them (starting with some base value) and how many you sell per X amount of time, so I don't think you need to worry about having a nicer trader/pixelizer machine to get better efficiency -- meaning you don't have to worry as much about someone else with a similar recipe fighting with your mod over what item gets created. You just make the convertor directly.

Now, this idea is different from EE (which Pahimar is still working on!) in that you have a simple economy simulation behind the pixelizer and the 3D printer; EE will be pre-calculating the EMC values of every item in the game. This means that your economy will lag slightly and can thus be gamed just a little, which I think is fine for what it is, while EMC values are a bit more rigid as long as you're not adding and removing mods all the time.

I didn't said constant, a simple request about the size of a webpage somewhere during the game session is enough.

Th pix are a currency created by an evil metalomancer metal golem, who use them as a way to lure players into travelling if different planes of existence and do all kind of jobs for him. It's one setup in my own dungeon and dragon universe. That currency is over 10 year old and is not linked to starbound lol.

If I remember correctly its MCedit compatible, so you should find working blueprints in Databases like http://www.minecraft-schematics.net/.
Although there is no Machine for autmoated Building in it, it has a Print function which places the Mats automatical from your Inventory.
Works perfectly with most Blocks, only limit is automatical Multipart, Multiblocks updates, sometimes upper halfblock and some mod entities derping last time I checked. But I agree: A only show Blueprint mode would be nice to have in BC6 ^^

OK. So, i had a really weird dream last night. It gave me the coolest idea ever, not necessarily for a mod but more like a portal idea. Like an monolithic gateway that every mob in the area runs from. Something large enough that a server would only want one.

So, constructing a large circular horizontal portal out of special stone type blocks. Putting runes of different colors/shapes on the portal and throwing something in. Next, it starts raining and lightning for about 2-3 minutes. During that time the portal goes into a charging phase where 2 things happen: It acts as a chunk loader(like a quarry that also load the immediate vicinity) and it also repels mobs of all kinds to the extent were they all exit the loaded area. When the charging time ends, it sends up a beacon like laser that makes the rain stop, sends out a server wide sound(similar to the wither), and then the portal opens.

The idea of a giant portal that with a bunch of things that make it seem like the world might really get destroyed if you open it. I don't care if it's not something that can actually be made. It was just an idea i got that seemed too good not to share.

The liquid sampler!
Sorting liquid can sometimes be a hassle. You need to obtain a full bucket before being able to sort it.
I suggest an item who act like a mix of a pipette and a bucket except it doesn't retain any liquid but only store the type of liquid.
You can click in machine GUI or a tank to store a sample and then put it in a filter inventory.

I'm not sure if this has been suggested elsewhere, but I always thought it would be cool if there could be an onslaught mode. The main thing it would do would be to buff the hell out of the mobs that currently exist (like allow them to destroy blocks, build bridges, scale walls) and add some new ones. Then at night, you'd better hope that your defenses are good enough to withstand the hordes, because sleeping in a bed wouldn't advance the game to daytime. Mobs used to be scary back in the early days of minecraft, and the goal of this mod would be to bring that fear/terror back.

Maybe it adds an entirely new bee 'tech tree' to Forestry.
Or maybe it does bees without Forestry, reducing the footprint of mods on your computer while still letting us have wax and honey. (I'm planning a mod called Mighty Fermentation, and mead will be in it, since mead is fermented honey.)

I saw this on @mDiyo's stream, so I don't know if it's already a mod or not, but it was related to the vanilla map item.
a minimap would be created on your screen when mdiyo was holding a vanilla map in his inventory, that's a pretty cool way to use the vanilla map as a minimap

though I started thinking of other things what you could do with a mod like that, as I always wanted a minimap be something you'd have to work towards, instead of having it right away for no price.
the player would have to craft a book, which you can open. in the book you can put empty maps, or pages, and you can equip the book in a special slot, probably through baubles.

when you walk around with the book in that slot, you'll get a minimap on your screen, slowly showing all the terrain that you've discovered. you'd be able to open the book through a hotkey, or take it out of the slot and open it in your hands, when you do that you'd be able to customize the book/minimap. you'd be able to move around the minimap on your screen, and resize it. you'd also be able to change the skin/look of the minimap, with a special directory in the minecraft folder containing different types of skins for the minimap, this would be a nice way of changing the minimap skin, depending on which dimension you're in, or what texturepack you're using.

another item you could need would be a quill, or perhaps require a quill to be able to write down waypoints. when you open the book the first page you see is a full view of the minimap at the current location you're at, you can resize and scroll through the map and you can right click to create waypoints. there'd be a small menu on the left or right with some buttons for some extra tabs, such as configuration, customization and perhaps even information

you'll need to supply the book with new pages/maps and ink for the quill, as it'll run out the more terrain you discover, and perhaps you could add certain items to gain special abilities with the book, like seeing entities, slime chunks, other players, biomes and more things like that

I feel like this would also be able to let you change certain chuncks int underground mode as well so you can see where all your mineshaft are
