We are all forgetting the most important thing here.

If this deal goes through, notch will be as rich as Gabe Newell. (Valve cofounder)

That is just not okay.

Modders can expect to have their IP yoinked and exploited. BC? Taken over by a Microsoft team, then used as DLC. Wanna play with Buildcraft? That'll be $0.99 please. Thaumcraft 4? Oh, that's an extra $2. AE2? That's $2, or $5 for the version that removes channels (because we heard it was too hard and so we made a version that will sell more that goes back to AE's channel-less situation). Or, you can pay $25 and buy the 'Feed The 'Soft' bundle pack, with HUGE savings!

I'm making a simple statement: if this deal goes through, I'm done. It doesn't matter how good or bad microsoft is at managing minecraft. It doesn't matter if they ruin it or make it the best thing evar. I don't care if they actually fix the code and make it work smoothly. I don't care if they run it into the ground with microtransaction spam. All of that is irrelevant to me. I will not contribute to a microsoft project ever again.

some mods are released under GPL which means the microsoft may be able to sell them but is required to provide the source code along with it. So chances are they won't even bother asking for money because other people will have the sources and are able to build it and distribute to others.

then there are also the closed source mods (like AE2 currently) which M$ would have to spend time and money reverse engineering to be able to keep updating them if the dev just says "**** it" and bins all sources.

The amount of stupid in this thread is fucking staggering...

Not all, but most I must say...

@Vauthil any chance of moving this to another section cos it's got sweet f-all to do with mods, preferably general chat so we don't have to see it?

And merge any other "OMG MIKOSOFT H8T MODDERS" threads with it so we can have rages about mod balance in peace and harmonious tranquility?

I'm surprised there's so much talk about allowing modding, but little mention of Microsoft's stance on monetization.

I'd imagine that while they might allow the modding to continue, their stance on monetization is pretty damned strict.
And the subsequent prevention for anyone to make money off of Minecraft under Microsofts monetization stance would severely limit a lot of people from continueing what they're doing with Minecraft. Especially from the people that are making a living off of it.

The following decrease in content is likely to go hand-in-hand with a decrease in popularity.

And as much as I'd like to believe that Microsoft doesn't want to piss off 50 million people.
I have a hard time believing that they'll adjust their monetization stance.
A corporation's legal department has pretty strong opinions when it comes to protecting their IPs.

and how important is that again?
Because notch made one game, versus gabe Newell having a company, one of the most successful online game distributors ever, and making amazing games like half life and portal.

Offline mode is a thing.
There is a reason I liked the old (1.5 and below) launch system; it make it trivial to write a shell script launcher that would let you play your client in offline mode.

As a server admin, I could use it to log in as users, and fix their situations.
As a video recorder, I did use it to log in as "CameraMan" to record someone else on a server without disturbing "Keybounce" on that same server.

Some people, for some reason I've never understood, think that if I'm talking about launching in offline mode, I must be talking about stealing the game.

1.6 and above? It's a complete pain, and I don't have it working. I did request that on MultiMC, and they said it would go in, but I don't know if it is in yet or not; I strongly suspect that if Microsoft does anything with the login servers then it will be in MMC very very quickly.

Now, I do have one issue. I have a creative mode test world, that has normally been used in 164. I just used it in 1.8, to test the new vision system, and then ... all the player information had been changed to UUID form, and no longer usable by 164 clients. That's a real PITA. This on a server that runs in offline mode. So ... yea, even offline servers talk to the mojang servers.

I would propose to really start worrying once we:

a) know for sure the deal goes through. As far as I know that still hasn't been officially confirmed.
b) know for sure that the plans MS has with Minecraft are bad for us and the modding community. This is also far from certain. We simply don't know what MS plans to do. So it is useless to speculate about it.

Here is something to ponder to those who say it will not happen...it been two days since this news leaked everyone knows its all over the net ....yet no denial from Mojang what so ever ...if there was no truth to this at all there would have been a denial by now.. For those who don't think it's not going to happen I have some minecraft swamp land to sell you.:p

What I think is happening right now is that the deal isn't done yet but they are talking about it. That would explain the silence as they don't want to leak details on this potential deal out before it is finalized.

You could be right and the leak happened during ... but if I was a betting man and a businessman which am both  the deal is done and is in the hands of PR departments in both camps on how to best address this in public release of news which has now speed up because of leako_O

Or they're in talks with someone other than MS... It wasn't all that long ago that everyone thought Twitch was being purchased by Google and months went by without any denial. Then all of a sudden we find out Amazon actually bought them.

The sky has not fallen yet, and we may all be getting worked up over nothing.

I know I must sound like a broken record, but if you are interested in this specific topic of Microsoft's monetization of DLC and/or "third-party content", just look at the history of their Flight Simulator. For years they allowed "third-party content" to be created and utilized by their game engine... at no cost to anyone whatsoever. But when the final iteration was released, called "Microsoft Flight", there was no third-party content use allowed whatsoever and their in-house DLC was exorbitantly priced and woefully almost nonexistent, released at a glacial pace. In a word, it was pathetic to the loyal players and content creators. The game went from having a vibrant community surrounding it to having almost no community. The game didn't last very long (a few months at best?) before it was shut down and turned off for good. Well played MS, well played. What a bunch of dopes. sigh
