You go big don't you :D.

This isn't a bad reason to necro a thread by the way, you are adding something to your own thread in fairness. If you want to though, you might consider posting future updates in this thread at the community showcase where people often share and comment on base designs. You will get a wider audience too.

Also, the magnum torch also prevents mob spawns regardless of light level, similar to the chandelier but across a much wider area. Do you have chisel also. That mod adds some lovely bookcases. Some even have connected textures.
Actually, I don't usually build megastructures like this. It's just that since this is my new permanent base (My previous one was destroyed in an accident involving Antimatter) I want it to have enough space for pretty much anything in my modpack. Which says something.
That thread seems interesting, I'll take a look at it.
I have considered using Magnum Torches but they don't stick to walls or ceilings. Kinda sad because those things look frikkin awesome.
Chisel? Never heard of it. I'll take a look at it and see what there is.

Which modpack are you using?

I normally bury my magnum torches underground.

Another thing that prevents mob spawns is force bricks from Dartcraft. I love those things. Dartcraft isn't in many modpacks unfortunately, so you may not have that one. I think chisel is in at least some of the FTB packs but I might be wrong.

I'm not actually running an FTB modpack. I'm running my own custom modpack which is primarily based on most of the mods used in FTB modpacks.
Magnum Torches work UNDERGROUND? Then how would they produce light?
Dartcraft sounds interesting, I'll check it out.

You don't use magnum torches for their light.. You use them to prevent mob spawning :)

The light they emit is secondary to their effect on mob spawns. They will stop natural spawns no matter what the light level is in their area of effect (something like a 32 - 64 block radius). They don't prevent forced spawns though so you can still run mob spawners!

You can use other blocks for light. If you are getting into Thaumcraft, the Arcane lamp is nice.

That's actually a really smart tactic!
I am going to get into Thaumcraft soon, but not until I've gather enough resources and have finished up my base.

If you're looking for a ceiling effect, then go with chandeliers.
If you're aiming specifically at lighting as well, make a few wrath lamps.

P.S: Came straight to the last unread, so if this was all suggested before, do ignore my post.

Greg's Lighting is a handy mod for lighting up large areas, you can make floodlights which light up a large area in front of themselves.

Oh, if you do use GT, you could also use some of his world gen stones - granite in multiple colours - for your floors... NEI says mobs can't spawn on them.

I think in 1.7, once I have access to a sufficient number of mods, I'll build my Facility 2.0. I built the first one in 1.5.2 and it was huge and nice and pretty empty. I've got a better grasp of the mods now and I know I can fill it up very nicely.

I used the OpenBlocks Building Guide to make a beginner's effort at a castle, with a main central area and four "turret" type of circular towers at each corner. With the Geostrata Opal blocks in Monster, it is certainly a different look than my usual cave/hollowed-out mountainside, or a Direwolf 9x9 special.

But it's got a large area, so right now I only have two floors on it. But I put all my power generation (TE3 and IC2) inside a dome (again using the OpenBlocks Guide to make it) so that's in a separate building altogether.

But the number of floors really depends on how big. I've built bases on multiplayer servers where you could only protect a limited quantity of land area, so I would do what I call the "one-chunk challenge", and I'd built ALL my stuff in a 16x16 area stretching from bedrock to max height. :) Obviously I had LOTS of floors in that base. But in Ultimate modpack, I had a 5 chunk by 5 chunk area for my base, and I had no floors at all. LOL

Just wondering, but what do you guys use for automated base defense. At the moment I have a RotaryCraft Force Field and some Resonant Induction Tesla Coils (To zap nearby mobs). I will be adding golems later on when I start Thaumcraft but for the moment what should I use?

Rotary craft rail guns.
How many KG should the bullets be to reduce as much griefing as possible but have a large mob damage area? Because I have tried RC Railguns and god, some of the heavier bullets do a s**t ton of terrain damage. Also, would they work if placed on a 36 block high roof? Or would I have to place them on the ground?

I kind of feel that, fun as they are, railguns are drastic overkill for base defense.

I use an MFFS interdiction matrix. It's pretty reasonable on power drain for what you get.

I've tried MFFS, and OMYGOD those things lag like hell. I'm playing on a Macbook Pro (aka Bad computer for gaming) so can't really use MFFS.

Just the matrix? You don't need to pair it with a field.

I'd also recommend you check the java arguments thread around here somewhere; there's a link to it in Eyamaz's signature. Tuning those can really help with the memory-draining mods.

You can use the Interdiction Matrix alone? Didn't quite know that... And I'll check the Java arguments out.

Right now, my base has 4 floors. 2 above and two below ground. Since I finally got enough seared stone to build out my base, I am slowly going through it and completely rebuilding everything.

I have a 21x21 main keep with 4 round towers in the corners. The outer wall is made up of 7x7 towers with 5 thick walls in between. The walls span the 13 blocks between the towers, so my whole base takes up a 67 X 67 area.

Sorry for the lack of activity from me, I've been trying to fix a crash that corrupted my world. Anyways, what is the best type of wire/cable that you guys use? (Must be RF compatible) And also, I'm hitting 6 fps here, and I can't play on this world anymore. Anyone have any tips on lag reduction? I'd like at least 20 fps before I can continue on.
