By the way (and maybe this would require its own thread, but it's strangely on-topic here)... Do any of you have any tips of what to do with a huge base?

I mean, we've all been there at some point. You've got the world at your feet, a large, nice plain to build on, more resources than you could ever hope to spend, so you decide to build a giant castle.

...a few minutes (or hours) later, the castle is complete. Big, imposing halls, long corridors with plenty of side rooms, viewing galleries, ballrooms, dungeons... and emptiness. Lots and lots of emptiness.

You might manage to fill a big room with bookcases, and make a decent-looking library. Perhaps your ME Molecular Assembly Chamber takes up a room in your basement. Another room might be filled with crops. But in my experience, 90% of the rooms I build in my castle have nothing in them. Long corridors going nowhere, huge halls with some furniture in one corner and nothing else, several rooms whose only feature is a large window overlooking the rest of the (equally empty) castle. And then there's the task of lighting it all up so mobs won't spawn in there.

What do you do with all the space? Myself, I've stopped building big. I get too many awkwardly placed rooms I find no use for. I still have tons of resources, though, but it feels like there's nothing to spend them on. Any suggestions?

Trophy rooms. Get one of each mob in a safari net, fill a seared glass with every liquid. Make a turtle dance room also, because turtles.

In my current build I divided it between aesthetic areas above ground and functional areas below ground. The aesthetic area is quite big and there are loads of rooms that I will probably never use (although they are usually big enough to put at least some things in, but no areas for discrete wiring and such). When I planned the functional area, I conceived each room with a purpose. I looked through the creative tabs and got a rough idea of all of the things I wanted to do in my base. Then I built enough rooms that were big enough to do all of those things. Some rooms were designed specifically to do certain things like Blood Magic or Thaumcraft, but other rooms are more flexible. There is still a lot of empty space right now, but I have a rough plan to fill all the rooms before I abandon the world (probably to go to 1.7+).

Also, I am finding the constant fretting about on-topic/off-topic here a bit stifling, am I the only one? If we agree not to talk about politics and religion or whatever can we just be content that this has been a reasonably successful thread about base-building.

You can devote multiple (big) rooms for various mods. A few examples:

  • An Ars Magica room
  • A Thaumcraft room
  • Ore processing room (RotaryCraft, IndustrialCraft, Mekanism, whatever you like for ore processing)
  • AE system with big crafting room
  • Animal farms
  • Plant farms
  • Mob farms
  • ...

Or a Big Reactors Yellorium Reactor. Complete with Turbines. Or a Blood Magic Altar Tier 5. Either way, there's a million multiblock structures you could build to fill your castle up.

Make a castle made of OpenBlocks tanks and fill it with lava. Looks great, and you can tap magma-using engines and machines right to the nearest wall.
Not sure how it would affect CPU, though. And if it will be a problem to remove walls fast if needed.

That would probably kill the CPU off.

The lag from that would be awful.

Edit: Ninja'd

Probably worse than mine. ;) By mine I mean 6-25 FPS, depending on my render distance settings.

I honestly think it would melt most computers. The tanks are cool and all, but they lag way too much to be used.

That reminds me. What are the best (performance wise) tanks to use?
Pretty much anything but OpenBlocks Tanks are better then OpenBlocks Tanks. Performance wise, can anything beat Fluid Drums? No GUI, color band to show the fluid type, no visible changes when filled to any degree beyond having a fluid of some kind in it...

OpenBlock tanks are extremely cheap, once you get nether pumping going. RailCraft tanks can be better, but FTBLite2 does not have it.

I agree. Fluid drums hold a crap ton of stuffs and are overall lagless. Only problem is that they don't have a stackable feature where stacked drums act as one massive drum. I end up having to use a fluid drum with Resonant Portable Tanks on top set to transport all fluids to the drum below if the drum is not full.

In 1.7 there are upgraded drums which are very expensive but hold loads of fluid.

Also, Drum Waila integration is great.
