Back to topic...
In SMP I build vertically, to minimize chunkloading. Also, if IC jetpack or something similar is available, moving vertically is very fast.
In SSP I just wall out a piece of land and live/work/build there, without bothering about floors of ceilings.

OpenBlock tanks are extremely cheap, once you get nether pumping going. RailCraft tanks can be better, but FTBLite2 does not have it.
And they are the worst tank out there because they are horribly coded(unless they has recently changed). That said, a few XU Drums trump your castle of open block lava storage in terms of how much lava I have on hand when I need it and it's way less laggy.
That said, I also know of Extra Cells but I have no idea how server friendly they are let alone how effective they really are, so XU drums are pretty much the best I can name off hand.
A AE network holding everything I need and transfering it where I need it seems smart and useful, but I always worry about downtime and won't use AE storage unless I have a decent backup system.

I'm finding that my bases don't physically need to be as big any more.

Especially now I

The lava goes into the fluid cells then exports into magmatic dynamos which power the ME network which houses the fluid cells which export into magmatic dynamos which power the ME network which houses the fluid cells which export into magmatic dynamos which power the ME network which houses the fluid cells which export into magmatic dynamos which power the ME network which houses the fluid cells which export into magmatic dynamos which power the ME network which houses the fluid cells.

Only catch is when you can't power the magmatic dynamos at some point, your whole network shuts down. Plus Lava power is the pinnacle of boring power. Even solar is more fun, and that's because it's even lazier then lava power.
A backup generator is what is basically needed, plus a way to power said backup generator that isn't stored in the network, and a ME chest that can hold your items when you need them but your network is down. Redundancy is safer then putting all your eggs in one basket, mate. A survivalist generator with some charcoal in a normal chest nearby, powering a ME chest? Smart and effective. If a single EMP can ruin your whole base and shut down everything, you're doomed. Even if in real life this is dealt with by adding hardened electronics as they don't shut down the energy but ruin electronics, in Minecraft, the issue is slightly different. Unless it's a RoC EMP in which case you are evil to use one.

My current base is all one story buildings, converted from a village. I even have a couple of villagers around somewhere. I think.

In the past, I had multiple story bases, because I like building vertically. The second base I ever built, back in 1.4.7, was two towers, built from Basalt and Marble Bricks. One was four floors and the other was three. The taller one had a chimney sticking up, with Solar Panels placed for power. Looked really cool, and even had a train running down into it.

Then I built a two story power station hanging off the side of a mountain. It was awesome. The rest of my bases have all been single story affairs for the most part.
