I suspect that decent power generation is going to be a challenge in this map in general. I know that in my normal minecraft game (I tend to play DW20's modpack), that buildcraft fuel and a railcraft boiler tends to be my end goal.

That really isn't an option here, I did see that there is the biofuel in MFR and that the generator can create RF. I'll have to check that out when I get far enough along the tech tree.

There are quite a few options available. Some Examples:

- Igneous Extruder -> 16 Crucibles on Netherrack -> 10 Magmatic Dynamos (really good early power source)
- MFR Treefarm -> in Sawmill into planks -> Steam Dynamo
- MFR Mobfarm/Grinders -> Reactant Dynamos with Mob Essence and Gunpowder
- TNT Generator for your surplus on gunpowder
- Ender Generator with the pearls from the mobfarm
- Sieve Gravel for coal -> Magma Crucible -> Compression Dynamo (or use Ethanol for half the RF per bucket)
- MFR Farms (wheat, melons, pumpkins, carrots, potatoes, netherwart, cocoa, plus bone meal and ink) -> BioReactor -> Biofuel Generator
- MFR Witch Spawner -> Potion Generator (witches drop almost everything minus the mushrooms to make Splash Potions of Harming II = 320 RF/tick)

And now we've got BigReactors, that should fill all end-game needs. :)

You forgot, culinary generator... more power from better food.

I probably forgot a lot more than that, so many ways to do it if you start to get creative. :)

Blood Magic has things that can be used for power generation, bees are missing from the list, is there something in Thaumcraft to generate power? etc.

As Thaumcraft is a arcane based mod, i think the nearest your going to get to power generation is nitor (heat sources for crucibles) or alumentium in T&T generators. Don't quote me on that though. Never used TC since the original. Bad habit of spawning in massive taint areas on world generation.

Oh Jadedcat. Pahimar is wrong about you being sweet and all that if your Agrarian Skies modpack is anything to go by. It's sadistic and nasty. Just the way I like my foray into mods.

I've restarted my play of this map for the third time in a row (I hate the life system, as soon as you die with one life left it crashes ur world with no chance of stopping it)
And within a few hours I start to make a mob farm, but i haven't lit the island up yet
This is the result!

How do you get bees? I've seen the artificial hives, but not really sure how they work. I tried looking online, but couldn't find much information on them. According to NEI, bees are the only way to get the thaumcraft shards, so I want to get cracking on them. (and for the redstone)

To get bees you place scented artificial hives---an artificial hive dipped in an ex nihilo barrel of seed oil---in areas that would attract bees.

For example: Forest Bees need a Forest biome, lots of leaf blocks, and visibility of the sky---leaf blocks don't block the sky for this. So what I did was find a forest biome and then I built a cave out of leaf blocks. Place your scented artificial hives in there and come back later and check on them. The ones that attracted bees will have turned into forest bee hives, the ones that didn't will have turned back into artificial hives. Scoop the hives, shovel the artificials, place new scented artificials. Rinse and repeat until you have the bees you want. Another example is rocky bees which want rock all around them, any biome, and no sky visibility. So for them I made a cave out of smooth stone.

For shards you can get them by hammering certain materials, you don't need bees.

For all of this I'd recommend checking out the official threads for ex nihilo and ex aliquo. First post in each has just about everything you need to know about them.

Do cobble gen first. That way you have a furnace/slab furnace and can make charcoal to make torches. What I've found is that as long as I stay near the middle of the island at night nothing is far enough away to allow mobs to spawn. Do your edge work during the day until you get torches.

Golems can make a decent alternative to MFR for farms or grinding, although it's seldom the best use of resources in a Skyblock world. You can also duplicate gunpowder through Crucibles if you really wanted a crazy power generation technique. I've found myself swimming in the stuff from mob grinders built for other purposes, but it could be interesting as a project.

According to the description of Ex Aliquo, you get also bees from sieving Infested Leaves. ("It's a known fact that bees love to be around other insects. Sieving a bunch of Infested Leaves may yield some stinging results") Never tried it though.

If you get lucky, then you can get a full set of hives from the Reward Bags and never have to worry about it anymore. And you get bees/hives from the first couple quests. Put the bees into an apiary and you have a chance to get additional princesses, assuming you are using the new difficulty setting for Forestry.

Sieving infested leaves will only work if you have growthcraft bees installed as the mod refers to those bees in that context.

I got jaded bees from a quest/reward bag and bought monastic bees from villagers. Used scented artificial hives for all of my extra princesses, keeping the pristine and turning the rest into dna.

Playing on 1.0.10, will go as far as I can with this version. Only have 10-15 quests left outside of whatever is under The End, so no extra princesses. That is a good thing, extra princesses would mess up my bee automation unless the new ones were exactly the same as the princess already in the alveary/apiary.

Also made a different macro for Holding down left click for when i want to run the gravel through the sifter.

Gendustry also has a machine that makes bees from protein (another machine that breaks down any kind of meat, 5 porkchops per bee) and DNA (yet another machine that breaks down 10 drones or 10 forestry saplings per bee). They're always ignoble, but they're so easy to produce that you can just replace as needed. The only tricky part is that you first have to make a genetic template with every single gene included. That took me about 2 stacks of drones. Fortunately you can replace genes that are already in the template with ones you consider more favorable, so for example if you initially don't have a nocturnal gene, you can add it in later on.

Is it safe to upgrade? I saw people post about losing their worlds so I was afraid.

...and I haven't done the purple quest yet so that sheep wool dye nerf was in the back of my mind.

Does anyone have any suggestions for early power gen?

Coal/charcoal->steam dynamos + MFR tree farm.
Use the treefarm power to produce invar, then setup lava crucibles+magmatic dynamos.

After that you'll have the power to develop any of the other power sources in the game.

You can skip the steam step if you'd like since setting up a smeltery isn't a big deal with ex nihilo providing your gravel/sand/clay.
