AFAIK there is no other way to get netherrack that early on. So yes, just head to the nether for what you need/want.
I'm sure there are odd modded ways of getting netherrack, but i'm just as glad I'm not missing an obvious intended route.

@thephoenixlodge, you might want to mention in the book that players may need to create a portal at this point and may need materials from there to proceed further. My confusion here primarily arose because you have access to the Nether in chapter 5, and I am deliberately doing things (more or less) in order.

Do you know how the Mariculture Crucible works?

Nevermind, I guess you don't put lava into it, apparently it runs on coal instead - solid fuels.
You can also put a Mariculture tank filled with lava underneath it and it well heat up. Use very little lava compared to other fuels. A full tank lasts quite a while especially if you use a lever to turn off the crucible when not in use.

there isnt an order, some things you do in the later quest chains open up things in earlier quest chains. there is a quest to build a nether portal i think it comes after you get iron seeds

That's the one I'm referring to.

That said, I'm still proceeding through the book in typical front-to-back fashion. If the prevailing opinion is that people should be encouraged to skip back and forth (and I'll respect that if that's the case) then that should be mentioned at the beginning. Makes sense?

Its worth noting that there's absolutely no policy that players should be able to work beginning-to-end in an HQM, but it would be unusual not to be able to do so if desired.

i get what your saying but i think that would be a low priority thing since not all quests are completed yet, and organizing them like that would i assume be more troublesome as he could add more quests down the line or make changes that would mess that linear progression up and then have to rearrange everything again. it sounds like a final touch sort of thing

If its not already more-or-less ordered, you're right, it would be a massive pita.

Hence my suggestion to maybe plug the first chapter with a warning/suggestion that you're expected to roam around the book a bit. That's a simple solution that makes everyone happy :)

I think I may have found a game corrupting bug... I used a Titanium bucket on a Mariculture tank holding ethanol. Two different times it crashed the game and corrupted the save.(fortunately I backed up about 5 minutes before, and just before trying it again)

That's not conclusive in the slightest. Assuming that tall jungle tree means a 2x2, it's likely that your first tree was significantly taller than the second. What you should do, if you wanna test, is chop down some oak trees, set up two 20-block pillars of oak wood, and then use the fortune and non-fortune autosmelt lumber axes. Otherwise, without some control over the initial number of logs, you're just wasting your time.
OK Conclusive results... I just chopped down 3x 4x4 jungle trees both with and without fortune...

Without fortune = 220 charcoal

With Fortune III = 564 charcoal

SAME three trees, (copied a save) Same cheated in axe...

That is literally the only thing I truly like about Tinker. Autosmelt should just be a enchantment in general. It's frickin' amazing with fortune and even pre-cooks animals. I'm pretty it even works on ingots. Not sure if its better than tinker's big ol' messy smeltery, but better than a non-augemented pulverizer.

I relapsed dirt with garden soil, and i don't know how to spread crops on it! Help! There is a weird interface!
I know this was partially answered already. The plant arrangement UI is purely a decorative function. The gardening trowel tool you have in your hotbar that you used to open that UI doesn't serve any purpose in this pack. But if you want pretty things for the sake of pretty things, then by all means.

There may be some confusion from Garden Stuff and AgriCraft both adding a garden trowel tool. They serve different purposes.

In a future update (?) the correct use of the Garden Soil will be to til it like dirt, and placing crop sticks on top of it. As a small bonus, tilled garden soil is self-hydrating.

Untilled garden soil is also being used for any flower crops in 0.7. And I even included a quest about the garden trowel.

Another question, I found this chicken roaming around near my hole in the ground, no idea how it spawned, but I lured it into a small hole in my base, and I left for a bit, and it was gone when I came back. So, do chickens and whatnot despawn in this pack, or was that some kind of freak appearing and disappearing chicken?

Probably a jockey chicken. I have a bunch of chickens in my egg/feather farm and they don't despawn.

Yeah, I just realized it was a jockey, and I just saw another, but I still have no idea what happened with that one chicken... Maybe jockey-chickens have different metadata that lets them despawn?

I didn't think you could get a bucket of molten Titanium. I haven't tried it myself but in a recent PurpleMentat episode he tried using tinkers and mariculture and there was no way to get it. If you have a bucket of Titanium what exactly were you using it for?
