Check out the oil processing I've done in the TechRushTeam.

And here is how we get our oil.

Sven, you kinda alluded to this, but just an fyi for anyone else who cares, once you get into the higher tier Large Boilers, GT wins in both surge and constant output. May be true of the Titanium, I forget, but its definitely true of the Tungstensteel.
I agree.
In output GT boilers win hands down, both continuous and surge races, but as a primary source of steam I prefer RC since it uses less fuel... with a high capacity steam tank between RC boilers and steam turbines the RC setups handicap against the Large GT Bronze Boiler is also largely negated. But in pure Output per Time-unit the GT Boilers are way better...

Fuel-cost wise I'm not sure when(or if) the Large GT boilers are better than RC, but by the time you have the need for that much output the fuel issue of GT boilers are more easily solved with automatic farms for fuel than they are in the bronze era to early MV eras... having a 2 x 36LP RC boiler setup is after all an impressive 720L steam per tick, continuously... about 288EU/t depending on how you convert it.

If memory serves, the large titanium is better than a 36 LP in terms of surge AND efficiency is what I'm trying to say. You get more steam-per-coal.

Going by these links:

Note that for the large boiler wiki you need to scroll down to the GT Unofficial comparison.

Even a GT STeel is a little bit better. It produces 36K steam per coal versus RC's 35.6k steam per coal.

The Titanium and Tungstensteel versions are massively better all around. You just need to be able to afford one, and handle the stupid amounts of steam it can generate per tick.

I just learned the GT high pressure coal boiler is more efficient than the GT small coal boiler, 48k vs 43.2k steam per coal at peak efficiency. I thought it was the other way around. 48K is also equivalent to the peak efficiency from a Large Tungstensteel Boiler, making those the most efficient coal/steam producers in the pack.

That said, you need 24 HP Coal Boilers to match a single Railcraft 36-LP Boiler at 360 mb/t.

Buuuut if you do, your coal will last a lot longer (more than 25% longer without even factoring the heatup times)

-Edit-
Found the info further down on the page about the 5.09 update... interesting :)
36'000L of steam per charcoal? Afaik 1'200L per tick = 24'000L per second and charcoal. Or was the output of large boilers increased?
-Edit end-

Yes, HP coal boilers from GT is super efficient, but not automate-able like a RC boiler... and way slower, as you noted... HP boilers are "semi-manual" since a stack of charcoal lasts for 160 x 64 = 170minutes40seconds in one.

It's partly a matter of how much material you can spend per boiler versus how much fuel per steam.

Best per steam early on is GT HP boilers, but they are quite expensive when compared with steam output... however they have no automation available afaik.
Then you have the RC LP boilers... I'd not go for a boiler smaller than a 36 unit one because of fuel efficiency. They have a decent efficiency for the amount of materials for the boiler.
After them I'd go up to a GT Large boiler setup since the output per second is way higher than any RC options.

Although between the second (RC) and third (GT) phase of steam production you also get many other wonderful options of power production...

It won't pipe directly into the hqm block when that block is selected with the current quest?
Aha, so there is some HQM block.. lol. I've tried to get cells & tanks, but never thought to find if there is some block. :) Lemme check..

Yeps it works. :)

Also, can ethanol be created in this modpack?

I see recipes for it in the distillery and distillation tower.
I always feel proud of what i've managed to get done, then i come here and see that someone else already has a distillery tower and i havnt even built a large boiler yet >.<

Did a little math for a GT HP boiler, on a run of 64 charcoal you'd get approx 47k steam per charcoal at a rate of 15L/tick for a total runtime of 168minutes... this includes warmup and cooldown steam production, it uses 17,5 charcoal during it's warmup period.

that's a total of about 3ML of steam, or 1.2 million EU in a LV steam turbine, pretty decent.

yep
it needs Forestry Biomass, which can't be created (not industrial biomass, which actually can be created).

excuse my time to respond, my body decided i needed a nap just before i made my response ...
You can still make the forestry biomass, it took about 5 mins of digging in nei and the forestry fermenter is still avail as well.

The charcoal pit, a new GT steam tech machine just for the purpose. Suggest looking at the manual for a description, although it's not too hard to work out just from the machine tooltip how to use it.
Oh, I see; thanks. Kind of strange that it's a steam machine; but it doesn't need any steam to function.

You can make ethanol in the distillation tower however the numbers are very poor. Very low output so i think it needs a bit of a buff to be viable.

Im still dreaming about the GT gasifier, i can just imagine all the fun things you could do that. Then you could refine solid fuels into syngas which could either be burned in a gas turbine or refined further into methanol and then even further into dimethyl ether :) You could also have a low energy content syngas for when you gasify with air and a higher one with gasification with oxygen.

Now i have to settle for pyrolyzing wood into heavy oil which in my opinion could have the same stats but be called pyrolysis oil :)

Hm... NEI claims that biomass needed to produce ethanol can be created only in bottler, by unbottling biomass cell.
NEI has a somewhat small difficulty when displaying some forestry machine recipes, to get from the bottler to the fermenter, for the biomass recipe, you need to click around a bit.
