EnderIO is a mod that's kind of deserving to live in a vacuum almost by itself. Because it's got such a weird drawn out power curve, there are almost always easier options.

Chances are pretty good you have Bibliocraft, which has a bookshelf that lets you place the books on it and shows them as an item on the shelf. There's also a mod by that same name that adds just that item. It's a little less functional than the bibliocraft one but doesn't add anything else if...

I would recommend Automaton (spelled exactly the same) it's a fairly light pack, focused around progressing from Immersive to AE2 to Mekanism. There are some recipe changes for the later two mods, but are both things that simple progression through IE will ensure he has. It has a questbook...

Last time I tried external heater and Vanilla furnace smelting, it didn't work well because there were no extracting conveyors, so the furnaces would back up eventually because you had to pull with hoppers. It should work better now.

It's not Engineer's Toolbox. (Which made me really sad.) It's making your own multi-blocks to fill holes in existing structures. Such as the Multi-block smeltery IE lacks before you get to the arc furnace.

I mean... range upgrades for the wireless system went from 1 ender pearl, to 4 ender pearls. And while I realize for people with massive thousand enderman a minute farms that's not much, for me, who never does mob farms, it's a LOT of ender pearls. Even with Cloche's and Ender Lillies, it's a lot.

The change to chip crafting and more over the vast increase in expense for recipes, was enough to send me back to AE2.

Consider Modular Machinery as an alternative. It lets you create structures out of modular blocks. So you could have a basic furnace, or surround it with modular blocks and turn it into something else.

Twitch launcher can be finicky sometimes. Keep trying and it should work eventually.

Skip the step, use a sequential fabricator with a fluid tank upgrade and have the crafter insert planks, and the sequential fabricator output treated wood. 8 planks in, 8 planks out.

Hmm... Do you want exploration to be a thing? You could make structures generate in the world containing BWM brick blocks. So instead of having to go through the long, hard chain, you can potentially find structures in the world containing the materials you need. Hammer recipes are a bit weird...

How far back are you pushing the Alloy Kiln?

Did you say IE would be a focus mod? If so you could tweak the hammer recipe to give nugget dusts.

Pity there's no sluice boxes ala TFC that I can find. Would be a helpful early ore mechanic, perhaps using a bunch of Geolysis surface rocks to sluice out nuggets.
