I can say I think you're over thinking the industrial jump. That's the point where you'd begin being able to truly automate things. Reaching IE is the equivalent of arriving at the industrial age where things can be mass produced.

Multiple pumps is really the only option after a certain point.

Maybe have it turn into Pig Iron from Tinkers? Give it a unique recipe for turning into a pick head or sword blade. That gives a slightly more powerful weapon to smooth out the power curve, without jumping iron tier. (Plus free bacon.)

I only found it an issue if the quarry was in render range.

I always just pre-flooded my quarries to allieviate the issue. Stops lava updates, if water or oil are present it stops spreading and fires.

If it was Storage Drawers you were asking about, they're much simpler. As long as they're all touching they can connect with a controller. Trim will let them touch around corners, slave controllers give additional access points, upgrades are not sequential, but exist as direct expansions...

At the moment mostly 1.7.10 packs, because the 1.12 release is currently in alpha release. There was a 1.10 release, but it lacks the multiblocks.
