The problem with the harvester is if the tree grows too short it isn't found in the initial range of the harvester, being upside down and all... I haven't tried putting out at the base of the tree yet... Does that work?

Yes you can! The only pain is that they grow upside down. Have not figured out how to automate yet... Edit: misspelling

Also I use bloodwood trees for redstone. I got lucky early on with a loot bag with bloodwood saplings in it. I get 10-20 redstone per tree which is wondrous.

Yes, you are right, I could used that method to reignite the nether portal. I also could have reignited it by ricocheting a ghast fireball into the nether portal. I suppose I even could have explored a nearby nether fortress for a flint and steel which is a common loot item found in the chests...

Fairly certain the OP wants to know how to farm withers, not wither skeletons... You could use Panda4994's method here: Basically you push the wither into the ceiling of the nether and then wail on it. Edit: ninja'd

I found a reddit post about it here. Apparently the graves in 1.0.6 and 1.0.7 are bugged and delete your items instead of storing them. Disabling them in the configs doesn't really disable them either. The only fix is setting the grave block ID to 0 in the configs.

I've tried breaking the graves with fist, pick, and shovel and the items do not pop out of the graves.

The trees can even be the same species and mutate if they have different traits at all. Spectacles are a good idea.
