with adjusted gregtech.
i like what it adds, but not the early-game vanilla and basic IC2 nerfs.
theres a config for that thankfully.

I see this thread leading to heavy handed moderation, potential flame, & future locking.

But more to the point, even hard core gregtech fans find current changes rather intolerable. If you want numerous steps to get to a simple solution and a rigidly directed style of play, then gregtech is for you.

The tech component of GT makes playing the game really fun. The machines are meant to synergize with AE autocrafting as well, overclockers etc.

Aside from the new changes, wgt is the way to go. Plate-bending is borderline stupid, but whatever, I'll live. The latest changes... Well, I'm 1.4.7 4 life.

It depends. I prefer to make some interesting builds rather than spend whole day crafting.
If you choose to play with GT I recommend to change matterfabricator back to use 1m per UU instead of 16

I don't know how much recently changed, but before my break from FTB I definitely preferred to play with GT. It might be a lot more work and more time consuming, but I still feel it tied all the mods together into 1 pack. I also like it added things like rubies to make energy crystals and allows you to smelt unused tools back to ingots (that's also part of GT, right?).

Same here. GregTech adds so many cool machines to play around with, I just had to add it to the FTB Unleashed pack. And apparently disabled pretty much the same stupid recipes as you did. :)

A new person that has just joined may or may not want to discuss GT because he/she has not discussed it before. I think the threads get boring too. Someone who's been here since Oct. of last year probably is tired of it but, someone who has just joined today probably hasn't seen a GT thread yet. Just say'n.

Without. GregTech may add a bunch of things, but it's just one massive self-feeding cycle. IC2 on its own works just fine without AESUs and Lightning Rods. The only reason you needed all those extra machines was because GregTech made them necessary in the first place.

The only reason you would possibly need a self sufficient fusion reactor is to fuel all your matter fabs. (I actually made one once, it was fun but I will say Ultimate solars are just as effective...)

For a while, I considered GT a great mod for multiplayer servers, because I thought it throttled players from power-crafting up to endgame content stupidly fast. Unfortunately, nothing stops some people from going nuts with the high tier machines, so all it was actually throttling was the less intense players, creating this giant technology gap between players with regard to anything IC2 related. Within a week on a PvP server with world guard, you end up with the players who can kill everyone and the players who are killed all the time, with no one in between.

As someone who doesn't really use IC2 much anymore, I can take or leave GT on SSP. But for SMP? Off. Always off.
Unless you run a small white-list of friends you trust, it's just not worth it.

And in case it's not clear the matter fabs were to make the iridium FOR the reactor.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
With GT
(FTB ultimate)
-Yeah some nerfs are a little heavy handed, but with a bit of practice/forethought you can work around them and the result makes the game easier.
(I originally started without, and I [honest-to-god] got bored- then I heard about some of the chemical processing and thought I'd give it a go, built a system to manufacture turbine blades in a test world and I was hooked- GT will try to force you down a certain path, fight back and turn it on its head then use his tech to achieve your own ends. You know your games twisted when you've coupled a matterfab to run on a witch shard*.

*pigmen work too.

The thing is, with something that passive, like shards, or solars, it gets boring. Thats why I made a fusion reactor. But then it took too much to keep running so I made it self-sufficient. And now its basically the same as a super expensive solar array.

The fun is in the build; a massive contraption filled factory that generates a useful product from an unlikely source via a unique method simply because I can.

Witch shard -> redstone + glowstone (amplifier), redstone + alkahest= soulsand, into centrifuge = sand, saltpetre, coal dust (steel) and oil cell, into boiler via refinery,
Energy -> lava -> obsidian -> iron and silicon -> iron+ coal dust= steel, silicon makes cheapo circuits (woo circuit factory!)
Saltpetre sand+ dirt= forestry fertilizer= biofuel via distillation tower
Currently designing a system to run a nitrocoalfuel boiler with byproduct from putting oil through a second distil tower
