The first update for Win10 MC beta went out yesterday (8/11). It looks like they're keeping to the promise of listening to the community to help shape the game... Most "cosmetic" fixes came straight from the user comments, #1 being to add a full-screen mode.

It'd be nice to see a "big name" dev or two hanging out in the forums lighting a fire by asking for the things they need to easily create mods. Having written software using C I'd rather deal with C++.

I'd do this myself except I wouldn't know what to ask for. The last "big" projects I worked on: A text-based FAX receiver/logger and a LAN based auto-pager (had to write my own modem software for this) about 20 years ago, and some 8-bit software over 30 years ago including a game for the Apple II using 6502 Assembler and a multi-deck playing card game for CP/m and CDOS in Z80 Assembler. :D

Well, if you need a big name dev, I know that KingLemming hangs around here every once in a while. :) I don't know of any other devs that check here, though, so it looks like we'll only need to do one profane dev-summoning ritual.
Here we go...
*puts on cape and wizard hat*
*builds giant cobblestone creeper face*
*throws 7 potatoes onto the creeper face*
The offerings to the dev are complete. Now we must intone his username three times to bring him here from whatever dark land of programming he dwells in normally.
KingLemming!
KingLemming!
@KingLemming!

;)

(I thought that was funny, even if it was a little over the top)

Still no symbols in the update.

I noticed that the list of splash screen text is really massive compared to the Java version though. It even still includes a few mentioning Notch, which the Java version no longer has as of 1.8.5 I think it was. The only references to Notch in the Java version anymore are a now-unused shader, and where it drops an apple when someone named Notch is killed.

I totally DO NOT like where this is headed. Microsoft hasn't screwed anyone over yet.. Yet. I've seen it so many times where companies crash a good game into the ground by trying to make money off a new, second game off the same thing.

They've said they're not going to make a second game in the foreseeable future. :)
Don't worry about it. They're taking lots of user feedback for the Win10 beta, and if we can get a modder or 10 in there to ask for stuff we might finally get some more official support.

Isn't minecraft windows10 a completely separate game from the original?
Sort of. It's a C++ version, specifically for Windows 10. But that doesn't mean it's a "different game," it just means it works on a different OS, like pocket edition isn't a separate game but is meant for mobile devices. They don't plan on removing support for any platforms, and that includes good old Java MC. So, no worries. :)

I meant separate in the sense that you can buy a java minecraft, or you can buy a C++ minecraft.

But still.. I feel like Microsoft is really pushing on trying to make new minecraft products to make money (I don't blame them, but I still don't like it)

Actually, if you own a legit Java MC license right now you can get a free copy of Win10 "MC C++" with the same conditions as Mojang's license... Free updates in perpetuity. If you don't have the license you can download the trial version or buy the full version for $4.99. Later the full version will be $9.99.

To get the free version log onto your Mojang account and there is an activation code that will mark your account as "owning" Win10 MC beta. Then use the win10 app store to download the game.

The Win10 version is pretty much based on MCPE, which all versions are C++, and currently can play 8-player Lan games with a mix of Win10 and xbox players.

Eventually all MCPE versions (phones, tablets, consoles and PCs) will be able to join multiplayer games with each other as they get the code converged. I think this will happen before we see any kind of "feature merge" between MC: C++ and MC: Java.

Hopefully mod friendly features will appear before then.

Yes... I'm just curious how long before they start charging for every little thing. Xbox already charges for "add ons" that we currently have access to at no charge. Things like textures and skins and so on. With Windows 10 being what it is and the control microsoft has over what you can do in it, how long before they start charging for skins, textures, mods, addons, mod packs, name changes, or even further than that. how long before they add microtransactions like other games such as guild wars? or put some content behind a pay wall? Oh yeah you can fight the end dragon for 99c. Unlock the "end" a new realm full of possibility and dragons awaits! Home of the enderman. That's right for a one time charge you can unlock the end content.

Honestly... I don't think that's too far fetched.

They certainly have a record of that sort of thing, no doubt about it. BUT, Microsoft has to tread extremely carefully, they've already got the largest game fan-base to exist pissed at them for buying Minecraft, and that was before Microsoft even did anything. So, they might not be able to pull of micro-transactions without an internet riot (Remember when Steam tried to add paid-for mods?)

The "for-sale" add-ons are from the production house that Mojang licensed the xbox and playstation versions to long before Microsoft's purchase of Mojang. Blaming Microsoft for existing conditions are as valid as Steve Job's image as a saint and philanthropist.

I've been beta testing Microsoft software for almost 15 years and managing Microsoft networks for almost 25. I have not seen an intentional attempt to "screw the public" since Windows Me :D [Edit] Oh... and Bob. (look it up)

Has Microsoft made unpopular moves? Yes... I'm still mad that I can't update my main system to Win10 until October (when my tuner's new software comes out) because Windows Media Center isn't supported anymore and dropping Cable from my Comcast package will be more expensive than keeping it intact.

Has Microsoft made mistakes? That's open to interpretation... Many who don't know Windows under the hood saw Vista as a mistake. In my opinion they released Windows 8 based on what Apple users wanted, not what PC users wanted (and told them about all through testing) but I got used to it and dealt.

Microsoft has slowly been shifting it's business model to where all their income will be coming from "Big Business" instead of on the backs of consumers. They seem to have shrugged off the business model they learned from IBM and the exclusive contract for over 10 years that kept them from doing much more than making PC-DOS and PS/2 just for IBM.

I really doubt that all that many people are upset about the purchase. Besides, if people are that upset about it, it's their fault for not being able to accept that it's a standard business move. I can't see them doing anything to damage MC, that'll just hurt them in the long run and they most likely realise that.

Microsoft buying Mojang has been inconsequential to players so far, on the Java version at least. I'd say that the only action that could potentially be chalked up to the sale was Mojang integrating Java into the launcher, eliminating the separate download and totally hiding a competing product from users. Though even that was advantageous to users, and allows Mojang to develop using whichever version of Java they want, so it might have not even been due to Microsoft influence. It's just that the timing was certainly coincidental.

At the end of the day, Mojang still does far more to piss off Minecraft players/modders than Microsoft has. And to be honest I don't really care how bad they screw up Win10 Edition. They can nickel and dime people to hell and back, but they won't get any money out of me for it.

Thanks. Downloading now. Out of morbid curiosity.

Prepare for differences... The controls are based on console game ease-of-use (although keyboard/mouse and touchscreen are supported) and a lot of features from Vanilla aren't there yet, either. Some features coming in Vanilla 1.9 are already implemented as well, such as packed-dirt pathing.

Wait, I'm limited to 90 minutes of playtime?

If you got the activation code from Mojang and set up your Mojang account properly just click the "Buy" button on the opening screen of Win10 beta... There seems to be a slight sync issue between Mojang and the app store when it comes to auto-detecting the code.

You'll probably see a window pop up saying something about "try again later" but you'll get full mode, and not be charged.

Yea I went looking around trying to find the "full purchase" and there is nothing, so I assume I have it and it was a miscommunication.

On another note.

Spawning next to a chest that has ax, wood and apples and torch next to it and 30 blocks from a giant village and in the middle of a herd of sheep and flock of chickens? Wheres the fun in that? Where's the "punch the tree to get some wood" and running around trying to get enough supplies and making a hobbit hole before first night? This isn't your grandpas survival mode.
