This is really cool and it looks like a lot of effort was put into it... But why do we need an alternative to MCP, wouldn't that just fragment the modding community?
We don't particularly need one, but we don't exactly have an alternative, either. Microsoft bought Mojang a few weeks after I started working on it, which technically means Searge works for Microsoft too, so being able to build my own mods seemed like an even better idea. Everything gets reobfuscated in the end anyway, so ultimately they both speak the same language.
Keep in mind that of the three components that make up FMC, only one of them is specific to Minecraft. Fyddle and Meddle have nothing to do with the game, and can be used on any Java application. FMC simplifies that functionality for Minecraft specifically.
I don't really see the point. Even his own FAQ basically says it's a toy without much real use. I'm sure it's a fun project and there might be some fresh and interesting ideas within it, but I think it's counterproductive to try and fight the momentum behind FML/Forge.
Nothing about it is a toy, nor did I ever imply as much. It's a fully-functional set of software, with a lot of custom code for handling the lowest levels of Java class files. The mod loader component is the only portion which I said didn't particularly have a lot of use yet, only because there are other ways to load JAR mods. But even that still does what it's supposed to do.
FML/Forge's momentum is irrelevant. I don't decide how to spend my time based on what someone else is doing, especially when it's something I don't particularly enjoy using anymore.
