I like this, I think I might have a "Condensed Drop Slurry" Block or something crafted with a mix of some of these and then some in world wonder botania style, surround it with dirt and it converts 26 dirt into vitalized soil.

I'm having difficulty brainstorming methods for drop gathering in peaceful :( This kindof stumps me, I don't want to add in recipes for the drops... they act as significant bloat in dungeon chests if I add them in as loot, and world-gen possibilities would mostly seem out of place in the game (ore that drops flesh, bones and blaze rods :p). Adding mobs is more difficulty than I want in what is supposed to be a "small" mod (and it goes out of my current modding ability scope - not that I'm opposed to learning).

I do want to reach those also playing in peaceful mode but I am focusing on the idea of expanding the resources that you do have instead of pulling new ones out of thin air. Edit - namely the fact that you can't get any bones or spider eyes etc whilst in peaceful...

Well I could definitely see a horrible nightmare themed biom. The ground would be toxic to walk on. Forcing you to dig or build a path.
It would have bone trees, ones made from rotten flesh, and ones with spider eyes for berries.
Would that sort of thing work?

Why not do something with gravel? I always have entirely too much of that. Like you can use one stack in something to create saltpeter, which you then use in fertilizer.

Old mod that I liked that does exactly what you are talking about. KBI Enriched Gravel. Now if only someone would update it.

I definitely see that gravel doesn't have as many uses as it should, and this is truly a shame, but I can't see a natural fit with what I have in mind...

I'll mull over the design concept for a while, I could see a biome in the nether with some various types of foliage and trees that drop the various mob drops... Overworld would be too fantastical.

Between Mekanism and EnderIO, I never have enough gravel. Or rather flint, since both use it in ore processing.

and then there was Agrarian Skies, where you had so much flint you couldn't even void it in time before your whole world would get flooded with them
Interesting. I've never play AgSkies. Too much grinding and taking orders for my tastes. Plus I'm not a fan of tons of automation. I hand mine for as long as possible.

I try to automate mining as fast as possible. I know the game is called MINEcraft, but after often restarting worlds like 3x in a day.... mining gets quite boring

I tend to look at each "variety" of Minecraft as a completely different game.

Vanilla in particular, I'm quite an expert manual gatherer and I enjoy it. A significant portion of that enjoyment is that Vanilla is relatively balanced for its manual resource gathering, and I can expect to be able to craft most things I desire within a reasonable timeframe. It's very much about what you can physically build, and if I want to make something big, I can be proud of it.

By and large, most packs are balanced around enhanced returns, large-scale tools and automated gathering. Even putting tech mods aside, many of the magic mods expect you to use some form of enhanced harvesting. And in large-scale packs, to do otherwise is just painful in the extreme.

I could go on, mentioning survival packs and skyblock packs, etc, but I personally feel it's important to consider each pack its own game and play to the style of the pack for the best experience.

There's a peaceful table that can get mob items in peaceful mode.

But what if you are *not* in peaceful mode?

Some mods assume that you are a god at killing creepers, and want you to generate tons of gunpowder. One, called "vanilla" (Dire did a spotlight on it) has "TNT", which is only useful in very large quantities. See Etho as an example of what you can do with it. Another, RotaryCraft, still wants a fairly good amount of it (less than it used to, but still non-trivial amounts).

Then, as mentioned by someone else, Blaze Rods. Or, for some mods, ghast tears.

Yes, I *could* make mob farms. I don't like mob farms. The idea of abusing the game mechanics of the world to get stuff from "thin air" makes as much sense as the caphalogue system of early Homestuck that was just played for laughs.

Blaze rod, spider eye, music disks, ghast tear, gunpowder, magma cream -- these are the relatively valuable/hard to get drops.

string, bone, slimeball -- these are "easy" mob kills that frankly are too hard to get without killing stuff. Want to fish, or make a bow? Venture deep down into the depths for an abandoned mineshaft, and use your sword on the cobwebs. Want a puppy? Raid temples. Want sticky pistons? OK, small slimes are easy enough to kill.

The point is, alternative ways that aren't absolutely trivial would be nice. Ender lily seeds, and their slow rate of growth, is a nice touch. But blaze rods that grow like sugar cane in the nether? Trust me, that's only "rare" until you find your first one, I know how big a sugar cane field can grow, and there's no such thing as "slow" once you get going.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
I have to admit- I dislike abusing game mechanics, however 'proper' mob farms take a significant amount of effort to build and run efficiently- in vanilla its pretty much the only reason to build big [apart from the 'just because I can' type stuff]. It also requires a fair bit of ingenuity/creativity/design to rig the mob catchment and killing mechanisms; in a game centered around building and design thats not really a bad thing either.
It may be game mechanic abuse through and through, but it has a hell of a lot more gameplay in doing than camping spawners, continuous manual hunting, or yay another crop/bee to harvest and pipe about.

This reminds me that I forgot slimeballs and magma cream :/ That shall be tonight's objective. Tomorrow: maybe wither skulls, maybe not ;) (no, not via the default means)

If you have slimeballs and blaze powder, magma cream is not really needed since you can craft it.
