Tried it out, but seriously, tone down the mob griefing or most people will hate your pack. I realize you said "disable blah blah blah for easy mode" but most people would rather play a pack in it's native form without changing things. Otherwise, I just don't see this pack becoming very well liked.

How is it exploitative?

Epic Siege Mobs can still see you using X-ray. They can still mine through the ceiling, drop on your roof and start trying to dig through (which is why I advised building your box with murder holes so you can attack things on your roof). They can still noobpillar up and try digging through your floor (same thing, leave holes you can strike down through). They can still bridge sideways to your box and attack the walls, and you have to be ready to stop them there.

It's no different from building a barricade or lining the walls of a cave with obsidian except that you can (1) see the "outside" of your wall and hit them before they finish mining through it and (2) by building a small box you ensure that phantoms have to be in your sword range before you can hit them. You MUST actively defend it or they WILL come and kill you. You can't build the whole thing out of obsidian and just sit in it or sooner or later you'll open the door to ten thousand slimy, slimy things that've been waiting to say "Hi." Not to mention at least some of the mobs have diamond tools and apparently can break obsidian.

Drastic has included turrets for tower defense. If you don't build a base inside an open area, those turrets don't have anything to defend. Barricades are a part of tower defense. Drastic even changed the Dark Power quest line to allow you to purchase obsidian directly, rather than hunting obsidian-dropping mobs. I don't see how using that obsidian to create buildings with walls that take longer to break isn't within the spirit of the mod.

I don't see how this is more exploitative than any other building strategy. When you say someone is using an exploit, you're effectively saying they are cheating. I don't rightly appreciate that insinuation, sirrah.

You are welcome to play the game however you like it, of course, but please don't tell people who are using fairly straightforward defensive structural tactics (why call them "siege" mobs if there's no defensive structure? "Siege" means to assault a fortification!) that they are cheating or "not in the spirit of the mod."

------

NOTE FOR DRASTIC:

...And speaking of "exploits" which are nevertheless a part of standard minecraft strategy, in my latest let's play I realized that apparently the endless spring trick (2x2 hole, diagonally opposed water source blocks) has been disabled. The only time I've ever seen that done before was Crash Landing, and since this isn't a thirst-based mod I'm curious about it. Is that intentional, Drastic?

Yes, finite water is intentional. That is why you gain a spell to create water.

Then the pack isn't for those people. Too bad for them that they'll miss out on a good pack.

That's not really the issue though. The problem with this pack is that from the very beginning you are thrown into such an unforgiving world without much direction or explanation, and mobs that just steamroll through your puny stone sword with no armor right as you jump through the portal. I'm all for difficulty, but difficulty is something that should be eased into, and this pack has very little of that. You have to draw people in and then progressively challenge them. This pack misses the point in that area.

Sounds like Blood and Bones. Cool. Gonna have to bump it up to the top of my list of packs to try.

wow, you take constructive criticism well. No wonder you like griefing mods.

Dude. Ease up a little, hey? He made a joke. It was a joke. He linked a mod pack that didn't have griefy mods and was also cute and silly and cartoony. There is no need to be butthurt or to insult him by suggesting he doesn't take constructive criticism when he has repeatedly done so in this thread, trying to tune the modpack to make it something that isn't easy, but isn't impossible either.

He didn't call you names, he didn't insult you, he just linked probably the most obviously easy-mode pack he could find. He has repeatedly stated that the modpack is MEANT to be somewhat hard. I am NOBODY'S idea of a hardcore MC player, I don't have the reflexes for PvP, etc., etc. If you watch my let's play you will see me die on-camera, several times, and you will see the occasional Journeymap 'death-mark' from when I died while resource-gathering between streams that I've forgotten to delete so it doesn't clutter things. You will hear words your mom doesn't approve up when it happens, but I don't stop and I don't throw hissy-fits about it. Dying is part of the game. It happens. We pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and go on. It's obvious that in this pack you are expected to die a little, just look at the quest rewards. I think the way Drastic uses soulbound quest rewards to ensure that you can survive a bad respawn is a great thing.

This pack misses the point in that area.

And in basic MC you have no guidance, no "how-to", no questbook, you wander around punching trees and trying to build things and then night falls and the zombies come and you learn a valuable lesson. Yeah, bad spawns happen. I've talked about them happening here. And it has been toned down until it's pretty straightforward. The ONLY really tough spawns I've seen from the latest update (admittedly I only tried to make 8 worlds to see what they looked like) have been ones where there was lava right next to the destination portal and there wasn't anything to hide behind. Okay. That's just a bad worldgen. That can happen. Reroll.

If you don't want a difficult modpack, there are lots of easy modpacks around. I will continue to maintain that this is nowhere near as hard as many modpacks I've seen (consider how much you can screw up your first few days in Crash Landing and doom yourself thereby), and that it responds pretty well to having a plan, keeping in mind that your base needs to be defensible, etc.

It isn't hard to change the settings if you're convinced that you like the entire pack except for epic siege mobs, but that isn't the experience Drastic is aiming for, and that's fine. You are welcome to create your own modpack experience by adding or removing mods.

If you aren't comfortable with dying, if you ragequit when something you built gets blown up (Ohgod, creeper spawning inside an almost-finished statue built out of wool and clay...happened to me so many times), or you want mobs to be something you can just spam your sword-button at while standing behind a fence, this is probably not gonna work out for you, personally, but that doesn't mean it isn't the kind of mod other people are interested in.

Don't hate just because it isn't made with your personal level of difficulty in mind.

Sheesh. Yes he was being insulting, through the use of what you call a "joke", by implying that because comments on the pack being too griefy (yes I made that word up) that they are only capable of playing children's games. Did I get so pissed off about it that I felt the need to write a huge wall of text to defend my stance? Not at all. I simply stated that in it's current state, most people won't give it a chance due to the rough start and steep learning curve this pack has. Yes crash landing was hard, but I liked that one because it had a well crafted set of HQM missions to get you started for your first few days. Yes it was challenging, but also had a good progression. This pack it's difficult to even know where to start in the HQM book, and while the mob difficulty is probably about perfect for mid to late game, it's absolutely brutal to early game.

Just completed the Memory Fragment quest on a server and got "That player cannot be found" when i dropped the fragment. Was that the correct method? I wasn't able to right click it so I assumed toss = drop.

I added a workaround for this on the server when you try to drop it you will be notified on what you need to do to hand it in.
There's a bug only affecting cauldron (server side) with that which I'll see if it can get fixed up in the meantime.

I have 2 main grievances with this modpack. 1 after early game there is not much to do with the dark power, you can use it on nodes but you only need so many of them, I'm at 372 dark power with not much to spend it on. 2, mobs being able to spawn in light is super annoying, yes you can say that its just for difficulty and that's fine it's just that it spawns to many dumb deaths, also it makes building a base of any size a bad bad. That said i love this pack and have probably put in 50+ hours already.

Delerium. Take a chill. If you don't like the difficulty just tone it down yourself. This pack wasn't made for you to cruise right through and I don't believe it will be (cruisablier?) easier in the future. Secondly, no one insulted you in anyway. It was a lighthearted joke about ponies. If you really feel like there was any issues with the way anyone behaved, don't take it up here, go get a moderator to check it out.
Edit:

Minecraft is a game. Children play it and so do adults. If you're having fun with something and you aren't hurting anybody, your age isn't particularly important. Based on what little I know about the pony fandom, I'd guess the odds are pretty good most of the people playing that modpack are adults.

Also, bothering to explain something to someone who can't seem to tell that the modpack writer does take constructive criticism == being pissed off?

I see.

I have been looking for dark power drains late game and am totally up to ideas. I am also looking for any new spells that people have conjured up to be included as well.

Mobs should only be spawning in every 8th day, you can slab your base or place turrets around it to help a bit, though someone said that the turrets didn't agro lycanites mobs though I haven't attempted to reproduce that yet.

a spell that i would thick would be nice is a single target ranged mining spell, or a spell that pulls items to you although that can be done with a faerie. Also a ranged magelight would be cool but would be a higher spell tier.

I totally think dark power could be used to give you a giant taintacle spawn egg.

Just sayin'

Who's fighting? I've been perfectly chill, and just gave an opinion about the modpack. If you don't like that, you can equally, as you put it, gtfo. Likewise, I'm an adult and can discuss things in a civil manner, and don't need to go running off to a moderator just because someone disagrees with me.

Not even sure what your point is? My opinion was about difficulty level, not ponies. The only reason I commented about the video the modpack creator linked was because the "joke" as people call it seemed to be in bad taste as a reply to a total stranger giving feedback about the modpack.

I tried playing through the pack again, and this is a very good point. I spent so much time fighting with no "safe" moments or areas in the beginning that I didn't even have time to turn in quests on the book. I wall myself in only to have zombies breach moments later. I'm just having a hard time believing this is a pack you can really spend much time on without getting annoyed.

I think the issue most people are having here is that the pack very clearly isn't for you but instead of leaving it at that and being on your way you stick about and argue, it's not so much a discussion as it is just you telling people that you don't like it and them telling you that they do, people have differing opinions on what's fun, I like this masochistic hard stuff, if you don't then the pack's very much not designed for you and that's fine, there are plenty more packs out there.

With regards to later game dark power sinks, I'm starting to hit this point myself and I can come up with a few ideas at least for new spells.
- like someone above me said a single target ranged mining spell would be really nice, aswell as something that pulls items in to go with it
- maybe an aoe that pushes mobs away, jedi style
I'm sure I'll think of something really cool as soon as I leave for work...

spells aren't really a dark power sink though, but I struggle to think what item or block you could repeatedly give away without it causing problems, unless you did it at an extortionate rate. Maybe decorative blocks...

The other option is to nerf the amount of dark power received and to increase the cool down, but I am trying to avoid that since early game depends on it a bit.
