In your next Direwolf20 build, will you bother with IC2?

Does nobody realize that you can make solar MJ with IC2?
(Without gregtech hardmode) it's incredibly easy to spam out solar panels, and you can make literally tons of MJ with some circuit boards and electric engines.
Yeah, you can use RP2, but not everybody has time to watch things burn in a furnace for 20 minutes to get a single solar panel that's barely enough to even begin filling a battery box.
Also, IC2 machines are upgradeable. You can't make a pulverizor faster, you can only make more, which takes up too much space. With IC2, you can stick 12 overclockers, a stack of transformer upgrades and two stacks of energy storage upgrades and boom! you've got something far better than any nonsensical 'pulverizor'.
It takes 40k EU per tick to run, but it's still fast!

just under 4k EU/t actually, and you need 16 overclockers. ;)

Which discludes it from GregTech as you need an energy storage upgrade past ten overclockers I believe to give your machines enough power to be able to activate.

On the bright side, twelve overclockers, two energy storage upgrades, and a dedicated MFSU makes for some still-extremely-fast machines.

But for automatic processing, speed is not really a requirement in most situations.

Oh, so it was Gregtech that made it so you could only put 4 upgrades in a slot?

I believe so (that is what I have been told, at least, just confirmed by looking in Config/GregTech/GregTech.cfg, line 107: " I:UpgradeStacksize=4").

it was. I'd always go with 8 OC's, 2 transformer upgrades and 2-4 energy storage upgrades(when I play with GT, which isn't often). Still an exceedingly fast machine.

Is there a way to power IC2 machines directly with BC engines? (not biomass ones) If not, I'll just stick to TE. :/

You can ditch the transformers if you just use external transformers, as they'll pass on the EU, just in smaller ticks. Additional energy storage upgrades are always useful, but two is the amount needed to get a full stack done with twelve upgrades from what I've found.

No. BC engines produce MJ, not EU. If you are using the Ultimate pack, though, there are energy converting blocks that might do what you want.

Honestly I wouldn't mind it as much, but a lot of the IC2 stuff requires you to be very committed to IC2, like building a batbox to power your wrench, etc. It's like, what if we had to go through a large tech tree of TE just to make an aqueous accumulator.

It gets better: in the Ultimate and Mindcrack packs, GT's settings causes the electric wrench to be gated behind steel production.

This wouldn't bother me if the basic wrench was usable. (i.e. didn't have any chance for loss ever)

then use an omniwrench... 2 diamonds may suck a bit but it will stay with you for the entirety of your game.

I just think it's stupid I need to do that for what should be readily accessible functionality. :(

It's a balance element that the omnitools mod ruins, and something that would be nice to have a config value for, but something you should consider in regards to the way IC2 works.

That aside, at least omnitools adds a way to get out of that balance element, and the cost is high enough to be worth the removal of EU requirements (by the time you are willing to waste two diamonds like this, diamonds will surely not be all that rare).

I'd hate to turn this into an IC2 hate thread, but I think it's nice to to talk to each other about things that we all hate and know that we aren't alone.

Anyway, it isn't just the tools that i don't like, it's that everything is direction based, as well as the whole explosive-artificial-difficulty theme of IC2. I love the whole idea of having a mod that can store energy and that I can really control everything well. I'd love to get into Gregtech, but I'm afraid of going up to MFSU level because if I don't have the proper transformer (in the right direction, which I can't change without breaking the item and rebuilding it) or transformer upgrade (which I need before I connect my stuff) then everything decides to explode. What I'm trying to say here is that this doesn't make the game harder or teach us a lesson. In the end it's just artificial, frustrating difficulty that ruins the experience. It's just like when a creeper (or angry zombie) comes behind you and kills you, it's just frustrating. It's absurd to constantly check behind you for creepers, and there's nothing you can do about it. I understand that I could just use a wrench from a different mod to fix this, but why not just have IC2 change this. I'm sorry if I sound like I'm whining, I just need to rant about it. :/

Because that is how IC2 works. If you want this "fixed" (the correct term would be "changed", as it is not currently broken), you should ask in the IC2 thread for a config file option to be added for this (GregTech has an option to disable some of the more painful aspects in his main config file, I believe).

Personally, I like the concept that you require a special device to remove a machine, and that you don't always do it properly. I dislike when it happens to me, so I usually upgrade to an electric wrench as quickly as possible without moving my machines whenever possible. It makes me think a whole lot more about how I deal with the placement of my machines in my base.

Thanks for the help, and thanks for not telling me I'm an idiot for my opinions. xD

I can if you'd like, but I think the more config are always a good thing. I don't see that it hurts anyone to have them, after all.

Exactly what a lot of people seem to forget when it comes to "balancing". Would have been great if we had config files back in EE2... they had to nerf it for everyone and I miss it so much. :'c

Indeed. I'd love a way to set the EMC values of all items however I'd like, as well as disable items from the EMC system entirely.

So it goes, and so it shall be sadly.

fwiw, I like to see how things look and work together before I settle on a layout, and making it impossible to do so without breaking and re-placing a bunch of wires and crap is pretty much the opposite of good user experience design.

If I could propose 1 tiny thing MM; some method of altering appearance. If MPS becomes the new ubiquitous armor (which it most certainly should) it'd be nice if this time around we the players didn't look like members of the quantum clone-army again.

LOVE the mod <3

*edit: I'm dumb, just re-watched the spotlight and noted you're 10 steps ahead of the game regarding coloring / transparency / toggling. Well done. Incredibly well done.
