Lately ive been playing with keepinventory and hard difficulty to balance a bit. I like the flow of the game this way, i just wish i lost my exp on death as a penalty.

I do this too. Losing my stuff just irritates me and doesn't add anything to the game(IMO), so I tend to use keepInventory just so I don't end up ragequitting when I slip up. Plus I tend to be more adventurous if I can die without losing anything but my current location.

Aside from that I tend to use little things to save time, like setting it to dawn if I'm mid-project but "safe"(IE : By home). I've also cheated in things to test functionality(or just to see how they look, like various lights) before throwing the spawned items away.

Also : Man up people, if you're spawning in stuff or changing the rules, it's cheating. Sandbox or not, Minecraft survival mode is a game with clearly defined rules and expectations on how it should be played and no amount of semantics or arguing will change that. Nobody cares, so just wear your cheater badge with honor instead of trying to debate your way around the facts like a politician.

Exactly the same here.

On one occasion I broke an MFSU with my pick. Cheated one in and then felt so bad each time I walked past it I busted it again. (Yes, i picked up the machine parts. I earnt those. lol)

edit to add:

I have only died twice in three months. I take survival mode quite seriously, and until reading this thread I'd actually forgotten I applied the gamerule. too funny.

Just asked my kid brother - his response was classic: "I only cheat when it feels like I'm cheating"

So there it is. I guess we all set our own rules and then do our best to abide by them. When we make progress towards our personal goals, within the constraints we set ourselves, we feel like we've earnt someting. Thats a good feeling. Otherwise, the only person we cheat is ourselves.

I also used to spawn in what i wanted, but then also throw something else in my inventory to "pay" for it.

I usually play on peaceful, so the only things I do indeed cheat are enderpearls or blazerods. And not in whole stacks but only exactly as many, as I do need. I even build me a whole Factorization complex for my crystallizer for slimeballs (and just for that^^) in order to not have to spawn them in. I knew of gamerule commands - but never saw that "mobgriefing" one, which is the solely reason why I do play on peaceful. Now that I can not only deactivate creepernades and stop loosing my whole inventory just because of one wrong step after 2 hours of mining.. mhm.. might be time to bring back the evil stuff again. ;)

I don't feel guilty for cheating, I only feel great when I don't cheat. E.G. I paused in lava. I didn't have enough time to cheat myself out, so I let myself die and never refunded anything. I felt good about it.

Normally I cheat when I die and occasionally for that extra flax for that extra exchange aspect.

And I would always play on peaceful. Probably gonna disable the mobgriefing command that I never knew about until this thread.

It's part of the horrible accident that left my mouth stuck in an eternal grin, my eyes glued shut, and my skin turned a delightful minty color (and flavor, if the cannibals I met during my adventures in the Amazon are to be trusted on as much, but that is another story for another time).

Hehehe
So Guess What... Your the Joker. Batman fan?

Some of my cheating episodes :
  • I scouted the map in creative mode flight a couple of times trying to find a decent spot for a base (after a string of horrible spawns).
  • I did the same in the nether looking for more fortresses, since the two I've found didn't have a single nether wart in it
  • I was crafting something, very early game, with a full inventory. I needed some space so I took some iron bars and clicked outside the crafting grid to drop them. On the right side of the screen. On top of NEI. So I spawned them back in ;)
  • First time I tried to move a IC2 machine (with a pickaxe, like every other block in the game), it was a kind of wtf moment. Quick trip to the interwebs, back to MC, spawned it back, learned a lesson.
  • Switched to peaceful a couple of times to stop being bothered while doing complex builds.
  • Filled up a T5 shard of wither skellies, set it up, decided to move it, suddenly it's a regular skellie spawner. Bummer. Interwebs again. NEI to the rescue, now I know I need to use a gravity gun on that one.
  • Cleaned up some harddisk space, started generating ages with mystcraft (old version, where symbols were discovered by creating ages), was prepared for the page grind, no sweat, should be a fun ride, see some strange and wonderful things. Age number 1, some nausea, a couple of useful symbols. Age number 2, crash. Tried to solve it, no go, it would always crash. Gave up, spawned a notebook.

I have to play on peaceful to get anything above 10 FPS due to hardware issues so I occasionally cheat in mob drops. I always try to find and make really secure mob farms to help myself stop that, but building farms for each takes a while, so I end up cheating more than I like. Last night needed slime balls, walked to the nearest swamp I had about 600 blocks away about a 10 minute walk at my loading and FPS speed. Built a nether portal so I wouldn't have to do it again (was like the fourth time) popped in and ended up back at my base nether portal, hopped back then and ended up back at base,..... F*** this, cheated in some balls.

Never cheat.
I find the best way for me to learn to not do stupid thing like dump an entire bag of tools/machines into lava is to have to remake everything.

It's not like anything is irreplaceable, it just takes time to remake everything.

Certainly losing some tools or armor is a good lesson learned I agree. However, what if you are fooling around with some high-end GregTech stuff and blow up nearly all your machines?

Fortunately I only blew up one machine and a bat-box so it was no big deal to remake things, but the explosion radius of improperly destroying a GregTech machine is really large so I can imagine what damage could be done.

I cheat a little, i turn gamerule keepInventory to True, and mobGriefing to False. I used to cheat in ic2 machines when the wrench F'd them up when trying to get them, but then i found out about Lossless mode.. so ya, just the gamerules.

Oh right. I forgot that one time I was getting really pissed off at the TC3 research system, so I spawned in a few essentia vials to help get the ball rolling a bit. Nothing major, it's only a single vial to finish off the last 9% of a bit of research.

It all starts with a small thing like that. Shortly after, you're flying around with a inventory full of GraviChestPlates, wearing the Cheat Armor, drinking iridium smoothies. It's all downhill after that first time! Just say NO to cheating/Thaumcraft research. Either/or, hahah.

I wish I could do this IRL so I could finally get my wisdom teeth removed :D
What the heck good are balls going to be? Personally, I'd cheat in a good dentist, some nitrous oxide, and a large collection of assorted tea cups (mostly just to see the range of possible tea cup creation).
And before the dentist could operated, I'd just cheat in a system that allowed me to replace my entire teeth/gum system with a modified system for initial digestion. In fact, I'd cheat in a whole lot more modifications, and by then I'd have to take over the world and... Well, we all know where it goes from there.

Honey, you obviously haven't seen my first run in Minecraft. Or, for that matter, me playing video games before I was 14-ish. So much cheating...
