I agree with Guswut and Lambert. The game mode survival means that if you change anything away from the traditional rule base, be it a gamemode or using NEI Cheat Mode, then it's cheating.
As I said in my OP, I'm playing this iteration "harder", but I broke it when I realised that I'd lost some stuff that I really didn't want to have to rebuild, but earlier on, I'd manage to get 15 diamonds out of 6 blocks with my Fortune 2 pickaxe, and then a creeper blew me up, and I heard a sizzle. I just knew it was going to be the diamonds. Turned out it wasn't, but it was my diamond drill. I bit the bullet and recrafted it.
I agree with many people who've also stated that they play for fun, I easily fall into this category, hence my willingness to break my "no cheating rule". If I have a choice between rage quitting and cheating in an item, I'll probably take the later.
When I stared playing minecraft, I was playing on peaceful, right now, I'm on hard, but there have been a couple of times when I've flicked it to peaceful to allow me to get back to my death point with no mobs in the way, but I turn it to hard again as soon as I can. However, I'm under no illusions that I'm not cheating. It is. If I wanted to play it properly, I'd disable cheats in NEI config, and leave it on hard difficulty regardless, but I suspect that I'd die at some point and rage quit.
Ultimately it comes down to how flexible you want to be with your game play style. Early one when I first started trying mods, I put buildcraft and TMI on, I cheated in a couple of quarries to see how they worked, I deleted the world soon afterwards, it wasn't fun, I could have whatever I wanted whenever I wanted it, after that I started playing with a bit of discipline.
I played a game with EE2 installed, but I put limits on how I could use it, I put nothing into the tablet to convert it to something else. I used the destruction catalyst but the Energy for it only came from the collectors that I could build from resources. It took me ages before I finally build up a flower, because I wasn't pouring everything into the collectors.
Ultimately it comes down to how you want to play in SSP, if you want to cheat everything in whenever you want it, fine, if you want to play properly, fine. I see it really up to the individual player.
