See, this is why I need that big turquoise grinning face backing me up :p As I point out in my signiture, I lack eloquence... but dear Guswut here has that in spades.

It's part of the horrible accident that left my mouth stuck in an eternal grin, my eyes glued shut, and my skin turned a delightful minty color (and flavor, if the cannibals I met during my adventures in the Amazon are to be trusted on as much, but that is another story for another time).

don't need cannibals to tell you when there are those willing to lick your cheek for a quid :p

On the bright side, my wife does that for me and I don't have to pay her anything (unless you count the offerings of makeup/peach ice cream/backrubs/and occasional small puppy). The biggest flaw, though, is that my massive beard (currently invisible to all forms of detection, per standing order 4925-3c) makes my cheeks defended.

I agree with Guswut and Lambert. The game mode survival means that if you change anything away from the traditional rule base, be it a gamemode or using NEI Cheat Mode, then it's cheating.

As I said in my OP, I'm playing this iteration "harder", but I broke it when I realised that I'd lost some stuff that I really didn't want to have to rebuild, but earlier on, I'd manage to get 15 diamonds out of 6 blocks with my Fortune 2 pickaxe, and then a creeper blew me up, and I heard a sizzle. I just knew it was going to be the diamonds. Turned out it wasn't, but it was my diamond drill. I bit the bullet and recrafted it.

I agree with many people who've also stated that they play for fun, I easily fall into this category, hence my willingness to break my "no cheating rule". If I have a choice between rage quitting and cheating in an item, I'll probably take the later.

When I stared playing minecraft, I was playing on peaceful, right now, I'm on hard, but there have been a couple of times when I've flicked it to peaceful to allow me to get back to my death point with no mobs in the way, but I turn it to hard again as soon as I can. However, I'm under no illusions that I'm not cheating. It is. If I wanted to play it properly, I'd disable cheats in NEI config, and leave it on hard difficulty regardless, but I suspect that I'd die at some point and rage quit.

Ultimately it comes down to how flexible you want to be with your game play style. Early one when I first started trying mods, I put buildcraft and TMI on, I cheated in a couple of quarries to see how they worked, I deleted the world soon afterwards, it wasn't fun, I could have whatever I wanted whenever I wanted it, after that I started playing with a bit of discipline.

I played a game with EE2 installed, but I put limits on how I could use it, I put nothing into the tablet to convert it to something else. I used the destruction catalyst but the Energy for it only came from the collectors that I could build from resources. It took me ages before I finally build up a flower, because I wasn't pouring everything into the collectors.

Ultimately it comes down to how you want to play in SSP, if you want to cheat everything in whenever you want it, fine, if you want to play properly, fine. I see it really up to the individual player.

I always just lock recipe mode on in NEI options to prevent myself from doing it. I made seven jetpacks just to get my stuff from a blaze spawner. One death at a time.
Yep I try to keep mine locked too, though it is very easy to unlock it. lol

It doesn't help that every time the pack is updated it gets unlocked by default.

I cheat in beginning-game stuff mostly. I'm playing a modpack, so I want to play with the mods. If I felt like working my way upo from wood to diamond, I'd play vanilla.

The idea that there is a proper way to play a true sandbox game with no real goals is ludicrous in and of itself. There is no real universal end goal of minecraft. Not even killing the ender dragon is a real end of minecraft. It's a gimmick. There's no story to minecraft, there's no reason to venture beyond certain things or build anything in any particular order. The only cheats as far as I see it is in multiplayer using things that make you fly, super speed, and one shot kill people/blocks. Survival or not there are no rules to SSP. The rules only exist in your mind and the rules in your mind are what define cheating from that point on to you.

Yes, there are. Type "/gamerule" in the chat and see what happens. Those are some of the accessible rules that can, currently, be changed.

Survival mode is a game not based around the sandbox system (that is Creative mode, which is much closer to what you are describing, but not exactly that at all) but around a resource management/collection system. Yes, there are sandbox elements, but the majority of the game will end up being obtaining resources to obtain more things to obtain more resources. The mid to end of the game often allow you to start building whatever you want, but that is a luxury normally in the start of the game, as well as in the middle of the game.

You may not like that this is how survival mode of MineCraft works, but that is what it is. No amount of arguing will change the simple fact that survival mode is not a sandbox game with no rules.

"In a true "sandbox", the player has tools to modify the world themselves and create how they play."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandbox_game

That is minecraft. There is no other definition for it because survival doesn't have to be gathering resources, it can be adventuring, it can be a literally infinite amount of things given mods. Sandbox != unlimited resources.

I usually "cheat" when starting a new world by turning on creative, turning on infinite day, and then flying around searching for an interesting biome combo to start in. In my previous unmodded minecraft days I would first build a boat, sail around until I found a cool island, and then build there. I see this as a less time consuming way to do that.

after I find a good spot, I turn off creative, turn on time, and put NEI in recipe mode - then go from there.

I almost never spawn in stuff, that takes away too much of the game for me, and the few times I did it (long ago) I always had a bad conscience and couldn't really enjoy that world anymore. But I wouldn't look down on people who do, that's the beauty of Minecraft, everybody plays it the way he likes it, the only thing that matters is having fun.

The only exception is when I loose stuff because of bugs/glitches, or when I can't get an item in a legit way. E.g., when playing on dw20 I spawned in an ultimate solar helmet, which I couldn't craft without advanced solar panels. But honestly, after going through the pain of legitimately crafting a gravisuit, I thought that I earned it. I could have made an HV solar array and thrown it away, but after the gravisuit I felt kinda exhausted in terms of PITA-crafting.

Oh, and I always have NEI on utility and activate the magnet mode. I just love it, cheating or not.

Kid made me cheat!
Lol back awhile ago when I started my server. The boy got tired of hunting Wither Skelies in the Nether. As he had never used Portal Gun before and was extremly interested in it. He moaned till I gave him OP so he could spawn some skelly spawners for the Nether. So I did :(
Little bugger built the drop enough to farm a few heads kill a couple Big Boys (legit I might add) and then I havent seen him on since after he played around with Portal Gun Mod.
Granted he gets a little annoyed with my Old system because Its not as good as my new one. Typical Teenager wants Everything, without doing the work for it!

Thats about my only Cheat. Although its a big One! Due the Wither Skellies drop Coal. I havent really farmed them for sometime though. Been more upto the Quarries to get my Coal.

What the hell is the point in cheating in SSP? How weak willed and sad must you be when there is creative mode right there for testing stuff?

I am terrible when I play ssp. I keep on using NEI to spawn things in. I keep on justifying to myself the spawning in of diamond tools to start off with, amongst other things... (It's an affliction...)

I spawned in some stuff like a wither star or blazerods when I got stuck on those items because that's the part about minecraft that I really dislike. For some wierd reason I don't mind searching for diamonds but when I have to go searching for a nether fortress I really start to dislike the game. Don't know why but the Nether rubs me the wrong way, something about the colors. But that's the only thing I've ever spawned. I'm quite glad that on our server we have a steady supply of those drops and I don't need to go hunting for a blaze spawner myself.[DOUBLEPOST=1362727543][/DOUBLEPOST]
What the hell is the point in cheating in SSP?

The point is doing stuff you like and skipping the stuff you dislike. I personally like building factories and gathering the materials for them. But I really dislike the grind that is gathering mob drops. I probably played too much WoW ;)

Whenever I've died due to lag (usally near lava or a lot of mobs), then I'll either cheat in the lost items, or switch to peaceful so I can get my items back before they despawn.
Other cheats are getting a stack of wood/cobble/other cheap material when I'm building something, and I run out of the last few pieces. But to balance this, I only cheat in the items that I am producing automatically, from cobble gens and tree farms. Just saves the time running back to base, get those items, and running back again

Yeah that too, yesterday I needed iron to make a pick. For the life of me, my mine stairs had NO iron at all and through chests and stuff I only managed to get two ingots. I certainly wouldn't dig around to find that last iron ore, BOOM iron ingot in my inventory. And now with Ars Magica, I don't have to build houses! Buildings are randomly created by AM for spells and stuff so I live there :p

In my last Magic World world I cheated an Advanced Miner's Pack right away, went caving for a couple of hours, got back with a bunch of goodies and started making machines to play with the mods. I just saved myself some time, I would have gathered the resources anyway but I would have taken a lot more time if I did it "legit".
