When you pull items out of an item valve, it pulls items in the world next to it, kind of like a hopper. If you push into it, it spits them out, but completely straight unlike droppers.

Pulling from/pushing into a Block Gate's inventory makes it act as a block breaker/placer. Mind you, it right-clicks to place, so you can use it like an autonomous activator for right clicking. If an item cannot be placed, it's spit out like an Item Valve.

I see. Harvestcraft has so many recipes, I get confused.
I start with what I have on hand and ask NEI what I can do with it. Even with just apples you can make two dishes: juice and salad. Same with most other fruits.

This fails when you start hoeing grass, because the amount of recipes you can make explodes. With tofu in particular.

You could just nei meals based on ranking and go about making things that require the least amount of resources/work to produce, maybe? Full, Wholesome, etc and make farm patches accordingly.

Or just make things you'd really like to eat irl - personally like my fries and burgers. After peanut butter and jelly, of course.

What I did was to have NEI filter on the various meal levels and checked their recipes, picking out which ones looked to have reasonable ingredients. Takes a while, but at least gives you some feel for what is out there. Here's the table I made for myself of low level foods, the ingredients are not necessarily complete (in particular water isn't included) but are more to give a general feel for what is needed.

Light meal:
Breaded Porkchop: Flour + porkchop
Celery and Peanut Butter: Celery + Peanut
Fish Sticks: Fish + Flour
Fruit Salad: 2 berries
Garden Soup: Stock + 2 veggies

Nourishing light meal:
Blueberry Muffin: Blueberry + flour + egg
Beef Jerky: Beef + salt
Fries: Potato + Salt
Pancakes: Flour + Egg + Milk
Potato Salad: Potato + Egg

Hearty light meal:
Buttered Potato: potato + butter

Unfulfilling Meal:
Vegetable Soup: Stock + carrot + potato + mushroom

To check (that others have mentioned):
Stuffed Eggplant
Meaty Stew

This was for a more generic modpack, so it doesn't have some obvious ones for this pack like rice soup.
For late game, filter on "feast".

Stock, rice soup, seed soup, somethingy doodler roast (potato, carrot, stock, soybean and pot) and some beef jerky you get from city. In need, eat some zombie jerky

My food list:
Pre-mob farm:
Rice soup until diminishing returns start, then supplement with fruit salad, juices and stock, occasionally spider eye soup.

After killing the ~100 zombies needed to drop potatoes and carrots:
Vegetable soup (requires both carrots and potatoes), rice soup, garden soup, potato soup, fruit salad. You no longer need to ever eat foods with less than 1.5 hunger bars and a modest farm produces more than you need. Seriously, you can start composting the carrots and potatoes.

Once you get grapes from sieving dirt, you can upgrade your fruit salad with those.

I just upgraded my regular tools to alumite, plus an excavator because the regular shovel wears down too quickly.

What TiCo tools do you make once you get smeltery?

I made a mattock and a pick at first.
A quest has you make a dagger
Then I expanded it out to shovel and axe as they were quicker than the mattock.

But that's not really the best way to do it

*Edit*
D'oh learning to read, once I got the smeltery running I just upgraded what I already had. Steel is a good option. Sword upgrades, Alumite etc

A weird thing for thosr who try to automate squid plants seeds
If you apply bonmeal at the same time they plan (within a few ticks) it breaks it off

And that was a PITA to male the system xd
