Just a heads up, while this is good advice (I used to use this myself), later versions of GregTech (assuming it is kept in the pack) do nerf scaffolds to 4 per crafting recipe instead of the normal 16.

Greg needs to stop playing crazy boss of us all. He's out of control.

I think the tragedy is that the scaffolding is supposed to be a convenience for builders to go vertical both in terms of cost (cheap to make) and also the convenience of being able to collapse a large scaffold structure by breaking the bottom blocks.

But someone bent on making the game "harder" sees people abusing them for EU so screw the builders, nerf scaffolds as a fuel source.

Truthfully, I don't know many people who actually build with scaffolding on a regular basis thanks to jetpacks, but it's the underlying principle. The solution, rather than undermining the proper use of the item, would have been to go after the fuel value directly. I guess when your all encompassing goal is to suck every last bit of convenience out of a game, collateral damage is acceptable. It's not modded Minecraft, it's war, dammit!

Do the research before you mouth off. There are plenty of valid reasons to dislike things Greg is doing, but that particular bit isn't one of them. The fact of the matter is he can't nerf the fuel value directly. That isn't within his ability to do so or he would have.

Then he should have left it alone. How's that for an option? If he can't do something properly, he shouldn't do it at all. That's the bottom line. He's clearly the kind of guy who should be coding for game designers, not trying to design and code games (mods) himself. That's what it boils down to, because he's too quick to sacrifice fun in the name of shaping someone else' work to his vision of "hard".

problems with the api for industrial craft, or just something never thought of? The base material could be changed so the game thinks that they are not flamable and wouldn't that make the burn value 0?
The way I hear it, the method to change burn value is through Forge, but it only provides for increasing burn value, not reducing.

Better. At least you've changed your complaint to something more appropriate. This probably isn't the best place for your tirade, however. GregTech ranting has had enough threads locked.

Did you suddenly become a pocket moderator? All I did was restate my original position in more fanboi-friendly language and voila, you understood. You're right...this isn't the place for this conversation, but as long as GregTech remains in the pack this kind of thing is sadly going to be a regular occurrence.

My issue was with the the incorrect assumption primarily and how much GregTech hate is consuming things secondly. (My priorities might be a little backwards there, I'll admit.) I'm a firm believer that if you're going to hate something, at least do it for the right reasons. Hating something for a false assumption isn't a right reason. Word is that GregTech is being removed anyways; further hate of it really is not needed. It's beating a dead horse at this point.

Anyway, back on topic in an attempt to keep this thread from being closed. You should probably just ignore the GregTech argument. As a new player, it doesn't have much of a bearing on you and they're not saying anything that hasn't been said elsewhere already. Enough threads have been closed because of GregTech arguments already.

So, I don't have much to add so I guess I'll summarize and condense a lot of the separate tips people have given. Start out like in vanilla Minecraft. Punch trees, make a pickaxe, mine stone, get stone tools, etc. Once you get the beginning stuff out of the way, start to stock up on metals (especially iron, copper, and tin), and redstone too. Start building machines like people have recommended. Begin with either the Macerator (although if you have GregTech enabled, you probably won't be able to build it yet) or the Pulverizer. Both require different kinds of power. The Macerator uses generators, solar panels, water mills, and a few more advanced power sources. The Pulverizer uses engines. Both will grind each block of ore into two of another item (either X dust or pulverized X). Smelt the result, and you've got twice as much metal as you would have gotten from just smelting the ore itself. Trust me, you're going to need all that extra metal. Definitely start stockpiling. If you run low on space, build barrels (which can hold up to 64 stacks of a single item, right click with item to deposit a stack, left click to pull out a stack) or iron chests (which hold as much as double chests, and can be upgraded into silver/gold/diamond chests when needed).

If you're looking to get into the new carts and rails, build a Coke Oven (place a 3x3x3 cube of coke oven brick, with an empty block in the very center) and put coal in it to start generating creosote oil, which is used for rails, and coal coke, which can be burned just like coal in generators and furnaces and such, but lasts much longer. It's really slow, so definitely start it early, once you have enough sand and clay to build it and enough coal to use it.

Once you've built up lots of metals and redstone and such, you have a lot more options and what you do then is pretty much up to you. You could go to the Nether and start mining glowstone to make some cool stuff, build a quarry to mine for you (make sure you have a way to handle the excessive amounts of dirt/cobble/sand you'll be getting from that), build more power generation and machines, set up automated farms, etc.

If you're going to find videos to watch, definitely look for people who haven't played FTB or the mods it includes before. or people who have but aren't very familiar with it. Yes, they may not always do things the "right" or "best" way, but it's easier to learn along with them than it is to follow what an expert is doing.

And once again, if you have specific questions, don't be afraid to ask. Most of the people here are pretty nice when they aren't arguing about GregTech.

I think i should work on one mod at a time, I'm thinking of starting with IC2. Only problem then is where to go next. Since i will want to move on to other things, and my guess is i will need other things to go though some of the stuff within IC2.

There is no "Best Way" really. If what you've built produces the correct result, then give yourself a clap on the back. No doubt there will be ways to make the system more efficient (using less resources, produce items faster, take up less space, etc, etc) but that's the challenge once you've established the basics.

My first play through in Tekkit resulted in my rebuilding my initial machine setups with IC2 and BC pipes a few times as I kept learning new things.

For myself, I want to use StevesCarts, so I believe I need to start using Railcraft too, which I did avoid due to cost and apparent complexity.

You could try the Easy Crafting mod - there is a 1.4.2 version you can add to FTB .. it can be found here http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic...ing-automatic-crafting-table-one-click-craft/

It basically adds a crafting table which just looks at your inventory and goes "Here's everything you can currently make", it will even look at what components you can make to make something else (not really sure how to word that correctly), what I mean though is if you have wood logs and say cobblestone then it will show you all the items you could make as if the wood logs had already been turned into wood planks (look at the screenshots they explain better than I can).

I'm going to say, until the GT situation is sorted out. Don't do IC2. Further I will say never START with IC2 with GT installed.

Or just disable GregTech like I did. If you do that all the recipies revert back to normal.

I don't know if it has been taken out yet, or if it will be taken out, but RichardG (IndustrialCraft developer for those of you that do not know) is petitioning pretty heavily to get it out of the pack, mainly because he doesn't like it messing with IndustrialCraft recipes, so for the time being I would recommend disabling GregTech until the situation becomes more clear.

It seems a shame, but maybe they could come to an agreement where gregtech would be disabled for the default pack, but allow it to stay in for those who enjoy the added difficulty (which if you understand forum logic, you'll understand why the complainers aren't representative)

I'm also new to FTB. I got into it because Etho started playing FTB recently as well (he's my favorite minecrafter). I'm using FTB for 1.4.2, I thought I mention that because things seem to change a lot between patches.

I've played on 2 worlds/games now, first time with lots of fails and without GregTech, 2nd time without fails (or a lot fewer at least) and with GregTech.

The only thing I want to say about GregTech, if you decide to disable it you will miss out on all the GregTech ores should you enable it later again (unless you generate new chunks). The reason I started my 2nd world is because I wanted a few machines/tools GregTech has and the ores it has make certain things easier to get. Basically if you enable the mod later it will be a lot harder on you than it would if you play with it from the start.

Anyway, in my first world I made many mistakes. I destroyed my first machine with my pick because I misplaced it, I used my only generator for my first solar panel, then I destroyed that as well because my wrench wasn't on lossless mode and once I did have my solar panel in place it wasn't nearly good enough to power my machines which caused everything to slow down to a crawl... Needless to say I had some near rage quit moments there (like figuring out recipes isn't hard enough on its own there are many things that can destroy them besides Creepers...), but I did learn a lot.

In my second world I first went exploring. I did that in my first world as well and got a lot of good stuff from the many villages I found (they spawn everywhere it seems, even in the middle of oceans and jungles, not sure if that's intended though xD, but some look pretty cool). Practically a suit of bronze armor (chest+pants)+ a bronze sword and a bronze pick is not hard to find in Blacksmiths, along with many ingots of different materials. They also provide a lot of food. I personally think exploring is key to a good start, it's a lot more fun and easier than digging straight down and doing everything from scratch. If you have a bed on single player it's also relatively low risk compared to caving with no armor and stone tools (though on water you're usually safe from mobs as well during the night).
I also picked up some rubber trees, especially their saplings, along the way. I had only 3 saplings though and that wasn't enough to sustain a farm, but I did know where a swamp was to get more.
Anyway, after exploring I was a lot more careful with placing my machines, I'm using Charcoal as my main fuel source, I still have my normal generator and I now make sure to have an electric wrench on lossless mode when I want to move stuff.
So far (because the macerator recipe from GregTech is disabled by default) I've had no trouble setting up base. I am having a harder time getting my power tools because they require steel now, but I think it is a fun challenge. In my first game I went from stone tools to power tools, which I don't mind, but I do think it's an indication of poor balance (especially because you will never use a regular tool again, except for Fortune picks...). Also because I used Charcoal as main fuel source I could actually skip the Coke furnace all together. The hardest part was actually finding a Nether Fortress for Magma cream/Blaze rods, but when I found a fortress and some Blaze the Blast Furnace was done in no time. I went to a swamp to get the slime balls btw.

Now that I think about it, a swamp (or near it) might be a good starting area. Usually you can find all the rubber trees you need to start a good farm and you can get find slimes as well to create your Blast furnace. In both games I settled in a Meadow though, I just love all that green grass and the huge trees (I think I might've gotten a bit infected with Etho's love for green though xD).

I haven't played much with all the FTB stuff, but I'd hate to see GregTech go just because people don't like it... If you don't like it disable it... I'm pretty sure many of the recipe changes can be disabled in the config, which is also something FTB can do to reduce the argument about it. If GregTech doesn't provide those config options though I see the issue, but in game I still think "expensive is better than not available at all" and I think there are enough reasons to want it.

I think i'm going to play with it off, *added difficulty. I don't want something that just makes it harder for now :). Maybe once i get use to it, since as far as i am aware it adds more stuff too. Not sure what just yet though.

I honestly don't understand what everyone's got against g-tech, it's awesome, when I finally built my effin gravi suit I started to jump around the room shouting' "F YOU GREG, F YOU!!" while cackling maniacally. It was great. I felt like beating a bear in arm wrestling.

By the way, did you know that you need over 3500 rubies for a fusion reactor?

Well you could say i'm a complete noob :D.[DOUBLEPOST=1355342078][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh one thing i do want to know, will there be wireless redstone? it's on the home page saying there is/will be.
It's one thing i did like when i tried out tekkit (which didn't last long).
It feels rushed/organised. Well at least in the creative department. On FTB we have the new creative menu which i love, and most stuff is where it should be.

but if i search for some items or scroll in the decoration tab half way the game crashes. I think this is only in servers.

and i also just added easy crafting too as suggested :D

That some serious wealth going into that here machine. but hey. we aren't even capable of sustaining a fusion reaction IRL with our brightest and best funded scientists...
It woulda felt very wrong if our minecraft dudes could ccobble a working fusion reactor together from plain stone (I'm looking at you computercraft)
