Throw a solar engine on the tree-cutter cart with the coal engine to greatly slow down fuel consumption. It really only needs fuel to run while it's removing the leaves above itself (and at night of course :)).

You could also set up an auto-crafting system so the cells never touch human hands until they're double cells. Or at least I hope you can - that's exactly the project I started before logging off to go to bed last night.

I would. I'm still on an IC2 track for my ore processing. IC2 machines are still awesome - they just require a little more work and patience with GregTech.
