The symbols are not enough, you still won't get the age you want. There is way too much random stuff now in the latest Mystcraft versions. (I have yet to get a world with simple solid ground after trying dozens of feature combinations.)

You have to create the wooden template, then use that to create a component (Rod, Pickaxe Head, whatever) from stone, wood, flint, slime. Then put this component (the Stone Pickaxe Head itself, not the template!) into the Casting Table and pour the molten Gold or Aluminum Brass over it. .

Did you enable Biomes o'Plenty? because then you'll get resource conflicts with GregTech. There was some guide hidden somewhere in the GregTech threads, that mentioned exactly which IDs and how to change them. But unfortunately I can't find it at the moment.

What pipes did you try, only BC or also liquiducts? My setup is using liquiducts and it works without problems. But that is also in 1.5.2 (not FTB Ultimate anymore).
