Oh yes, Vircomore is correct, wrath lamps create invisible entities to carry thier light over a large area. I almost forgot about that, but you shouldn't put wrath lamps near trees or quarries, as the quarry will try to mine the light entities aswell. DERP on my part for forgetting that.

Have you tried bonemeal on them? If even that won't grow them, i'd say it was something to do with how close they are to each other, I can't think of any other reason they wouldn't grow.

Save 11 diamonds, make a quarry. That's how I always start the mass resource gathering part. a 64x64 quarry will dig up a ton of coal. But by then you should be able to switch from coal to something better.
