For a server start you get spawn eggs, in single player, no such luck. My single player game has me spawned over Deep ocean. Am I going to have issues spawning passives?

I think I was unclear. I have successfully made Obsidian in the stone barrel before having a bucket by using the flowing water that is part of the cobble gen. I have a fully operational smelter also. All of this is possible since the IO Tank has built in push/pull ability.

It will be. The key to "Expert" mode is all about the automation, anything you will use as a material for crafting should be automated. If automating the hell out of your base does not appeal to you, this map will get frustrating.

That depends on if you are watching live or VoDs. The live stuff is on the FTB server which is kept current. The VoDs can go back all the way to Alpha, so much has changed. YouTube content is almost always on a delay of some sort, so that is harder to give an accurate answer.
