Depends on what you want. I'd say you keep all the mods, they all offer cool stuff.

Yeah, since batterys come with a damage value on them, they are different to the ones in NEI. It's the same with energy crystals and all kinds of IC2 things that use the damage bar to show charge.

Make yourselfes a Mystcraft age with all kinds of instability (slab some dense ores in it) and kill a Wither there.

How to skip vanilla: Use worktable with natura wood, make wooden tinkers tool. Kill slimes and make slime tools. Then mine some copper and tin and smelt it to bronze.

I think the world anchor is supposed to be a creative only item, since it can just chunkload chunks without any fuel. The personal anchor needs fuel in form of enderpearls. Tip: Instead of using these ones from Railcraft, use the chickenchunks chunkloaders. They don't need fuel :P

Actually I stay non-technical for quite a while. Usually I try to setup a smeltery first and start on the tinkers way.

That article... Faith in Humanity lost. Yeah, Minecraft is of course such a violent game, all it's guns and zombie slaying and ALL THE VIOLENCE! There aren't even guns in minecraft, unless that kid got some mods, which I doubt he's clever enough to install.
