You can, but it's much more expensive for the aura than Repair II. My base has 0 thaumcraft investment save for those tools and I still get flux effects. I stopped using them.

You can generate a ton of power by using Factorization to make steam. Play around with pipes and the solar boiler. I'll also probably do it for my Lethamyr series this weekend.

If you're lucky, you'll not have to use IndustrialCraft at all. Use factorization for your Solar.

I like to use fort mode, but one thing I love doing is going into adventure mode after my forts fail. Because they will.
