Personally I would reccomend TPPI. It has about 200 mods and it's pretty stable. It does have Gregtech, however it's on easy mode so Gregtech doesn't change any of recipes of the other mods.

Well in my case the can't keep up error and lag I was having was caused by Biomes O' Plenty. As soon as I removed that I was having no more problems

I wonder if the issue isn't with the mods, but with Forge

Well I can't wait for it. The Erebus even in it's current state is an awesome mod; hopefully we see it before 1.8.

That's how I understood it. I believe that since it's a third party pack it's up to Direwolf if it's going to be updated. And since there hasn't been an update for a while I would assume that Direwolf is just going to until 1.7

I would go with TPPI. Besides those two it has a really good selection of mods. To get it enter the private pack code MegaSharkPunch in the FTB launcher. Also if you're curious here is the modlist

If you want a lot of content I would recommend Resonant Rise, it has a good variety of mods. But if you were looking for one on the FTB launcher I would go with Monster or the Direwolf20 pack. There's also the TPPI pack which is made by a third party.
