On the other hand, what the MS man said made sense. MS has paid a lot of money for this. It doesn't make sense for them to close down things that contribute to the success of Minecraft. It is just business logic.

Personally I also feel that it is dangerous to talk too much about the negative things that could happen. Not that we should ignore that but with all those people crying out that 'Minecraft is dead', 'MS will sue us all', and so on I'm afraid that this will scare away new (and not-so-new) people...

It is almost certainly not possible to do that. Most mods have changed a huge deal from 1.6.4 to 1.7.10. So even if you can get the landscape converted all your mod stuff will be most likely invalid. I find a new version of Minecraft an ideal time to start a new world.
