Does base really need walls (with windows), ceiling and, even, floor?

Its a little hard to get to your stuff if there is nothing below your feet.

Dirt, Grass and Stone count as a floor ;)

Ive been wanting to do a void base with Natura redwoods, floating trees might look interesting.

I've been playing modded (and modern) MC about a month now, using Unleashed in single player mode. I found a 15 block diameter giant sequoia on my 5th world and have been living termite style ever since. :) You could say that my home blends in with the scenery, other than towering over it, and the fact that starting at 5 blocks up there are 3x3 bay windows on all four sides, with 2 more sets at 9 and 13 blocks high (levels 2,3 and 4).

As near as I can tell the tree is close to 200 blocks high from ground level so I should have plenty of room (and wood for construction). I'm currently learning about Tinker's construct and am thinking about starting another world to play with IC2. I'll probably try to find a tree to live in there as well.

[Edit] I just saw the few posts that beat mine since the last one I read.

All I can say is that chopping wood, in the proper fashion, is the new levitation

that is a natura giant tree. it extends down into the ground as well. the trunk even has a special bark block on the outside, corewood block on the inside, and root blocks below groundlevel. when first getting in worldgen range it will lag your computer like nobodys business. (no wonder with several thousand treeblocks of various types suddenly being generated at once).

these trees are fairly rare too. i have only ever seen 2 over a course of 10 or so worlds and hours upon hours of exploration.

Just plain unleashed... I'm too much of a noob to add my own mods just yet

The above image is a 9 block diameter tree that only half spawned. By comparison the tree on my current world is 15 blocks in diameter.

I don't know if the trees appear because BoP is active, but iirc a couple of the worlds I generated were set to default and not specifically to BoP on the creation screen. I have only found them in "Plains" biomes. I have yet to see them elsewhere.

The bark can be crafted into a door in the usual way... I get the extra 4 blocks needed by clearing a second level and making a 1 block window on each of the 4 sides (when I get glass these eventually become bay windows). The door IDs as a "Secret door" and I have yet to have a mob attack one.

I have 2 of those near my base.. about 40m apart. dunno why I didn't think of them.

you lucky child of a lucky star... 2 close together? damn. how on earth did you manage not to build in/on them?[DOUBLEPOST=1377838342][/DOUBLEPOST]

They are from the Natura mod, and BoP's interaction with these is rather limited, if you have a lot of extra BoP biomes added to the overworld, then these trees become even rarer than normal since they only spawn every once in a while in plains.

that half a tree thing is probably a biome boundrary bug. (the same bug also makes mountains sometimes have sheer cliffs. as if someone hacked the mountain in half, and then took off with the other half).

I have built plenty of bases inside mountains, completely underground, completely suspended, conformed to the landscape.. whatever I feel like. But I tend to do that more in MP than Single Player, since it's easier to show off your creations (My Mountain Lair build on the server I played with a bunch of friends was always a favorite, since I always had visitors coming to look around). In Single player I clear out flat land for the sake of efficiency.

I would really like to upgrade to 1.5, but singleplayer isnt just for me, i play on 2 servers, one with close friends and another with members of these forums (dentvar)
The servr with close friends i've stopped playing on since its 1.4 and i'll wait till its 1.6 since they dont want to update and lose their stuff just yet and the server with dentvar is offline due to him being on holiday.

On both servers, when i used to play on them i just made a simple base, in the sky which didnt look too pretty but stopped mobs from bothering me at night.

I'm not sure where I saw the picture I was basing the station off of, perhaps some cartoon, but it had that tall pillared look with windows between them, which is what I was going for. Plus I like to be able to see outside and look at the view while I'm waiting for machines to finish working. Being raised up in the air makes for a better view.
