OK, I don't know if I'm just having a senior moment, and I've seen this before, but: Compact Machines is available for 1.12! Which suggests that a new version of Obscurity could be made...!!!

Apparently Carpenter's blocks got a spiritual sucsessor. I believe it's called something along the lines of "blockcrafty"

The main thing I liked about carpenter's blocks was the ability to infuse anything with glowstone dust and make it a light source. It was great for someone like me that thinks if you can see a torch and you're not in a cave or something, then you're being lazy. I don't think you can do that with architecturecraft. Though, that's me splitting hairs :p

If it's still around (I'm still playing IE:S), there's a Light object in EnderIO that comes in powered, unpowered, and 'inverted'. The latter option requires no wiring (just a redstone torch in the recipe), and seems to emit as much light as a torch with a very low profile. I'm using it for my 'Villager Rehab Center' along with the 35872 million blocks of quartz I've gotten sifting soul-sand. Very nice 'hospital' aesthetic.

The words "villager rehab centre" fill my mind with questions! What is this of which you speak?

When skyblocking, and especially with Forestry, it can be useful to have a Villager to trade with. Easiest way to get one is to cure a Zombie Villager. Set up a dark room, wait for a Zombie Villager, and capture it by whatever means is handy, preferably getting it into a room with a bed and iron bars. Apply the cure (potion of weakness+golden apple), wait for the tremors to subside, and you have one happy, healthy Villager, who is no longer addicted to eating brains and can return to a productive life of trading. ;D

Oh my god, it's even better than I imagined... that is amazing, another reason why modded MC is the best :D

You know, that's one of the things I've always wanted to do in Vanilla or on the XBox - I've never managed it thus far, but its on my list of things to do :)

I had a small collection of villagers in Bee Happy - including one that looked like an Elvis impersonator. (No idea what mod he was from.) It's a lot easier in modded, since you have things like Safari Nets and that one lasso thing (I think they updated the Golden lasso to be peaceful mobs and have something else for hostiles.) Vanilla, you have to worry about them despawning while you get the treatment together. When I played Skyden back in the day, I even reconstructed all the different village buildings.

I THINK the Elvis villager was from OpenBlocks, don't quote me on that though ;) and yeah, the despawning and stuff makes it a little trickier - there's a reason I haven't managed it yet! But on my XBox 360 MC world, because it was of limited size and its a bit older, there are no villages AT ALL - so I'd planned to open my very own Villager Rehab and create a proper village! Not sure whether you can actually create a working village from scratch though...

Well, define 'working'. I think the new farming mechanic works even if it's a rehabbed villager. There's also no default 'home-seeking' with the former zombies, so you don't have to worry about getting them far enough away from their original location, or having them run off at the first opportunity.

(I just keep mine in Poke Safari Balls until I've got their meds ready, but if you can give them an item - boots or something - to keep them from despawning in vanilla.)

If you're going to use a mod like MFR to hold your zombie villager, it should be noted that if you apply the cure, then capture them, any subsequent spawns from that Safari Net will also already be in the process of curing (may have to choose exact copy, I forget). Since villager profession is chosen after the cure finishes, you can essentially use one zombie villager to repopulate all professions of villager.

Ah, I see you have discovered my master plan... ;) That'll probably stop working in any pack for the current MC, since they introduced the thing where the zombies have different colored robes, but here in 1.7? I will be fully exploiting that.
