So in every 1.7.10 pack I've tried to load up, my memory goes bonkers. It starts out with a gig or so of usage, then starts counting up like a stopwatch but with memory D: then when it hits about 50% memory usage it goes back down to 1 gig and counts up again. I also have memory usage set to 6 gigs on all three launchers, and permgen increased.

I'd like to play 1.7 packs, but this is kinda killer on my framerate. This has happened on every 1.7 pack I've tried to play, from ATLauncher, Unstable, Technic, every single one.

I have 8 gigs of memory, a Powercolor Radeon R9 270X graphics card, and an Intel i5 something or other. I'm very sure it's not my graphics card because no matter what graphics setting I change, the performance stays the same, which convinces me that my graphics card isn't getting much of a workout.

One more thing to note, my 8 gigs of ram have different frequencies, but that has never had any effect on performance in monster. I get 180FPS in a fairly new world.

The one thing I've thought of to fix it is to port it into a MMC instance and check the console to see what's going on, because nothing's crashing, but my memory is freaking out.

How much ram are you allocating in the client? The "sweet spot" seems to be around 3.5-4GB... Any more than that and java cannot clean up all of the old variables ("garbage collection") that are no longer used and memory usage will seem to go up, as well as taking up more time trying to complete the clean-up (lag).

FPS is definitely better but the stopwatch thing is still showing up. The weird thing is this has only been happening in 1.7.10..

Yeah maybe now it's just lying to me, task manager says java is using 40% or 3,000 MBs, but F3 is like a clock.

The RAM usage going up and down is normal. It's happened in every version I've played for years now. I believe thats actually the GC, and hence the source of lag with high RAM allocated. ( It lets the used ram get higher, so it has more to purge all at once. After a certain point, this will take longer than the time it takes to render a frame, and it will become the source of lag. )

To confirm, I see this in 1.6.4. Certain things seem to greatly speed up the rate the ram increases, but it's always doing it.

Try dropping it again to 3 and see what happens. I can run Monster on 2.75. You'll know when you've gone too low, cause it'll either frequently crash on load, or crash during play with an out of memory error.

Watch the RAM usage in the top right
[DOUBLEPOST=1410728482][/DOUBLEPOST]Ok yeah Monster is doing it too just like 40 times slower.

Yes. That's normal. It happens to most people, if not everybody.
Like @zemerick said, it periodically "purges" some memory. Hence the climbing, sudden drop, and then climbing again.

Personally, that drop makes me a happy minecrafter. Shows that the garbage collection is still working.
