I created this thread to have people discuss what their thoughts are on modding in MC Version 1.8.

You may discuss anything from what mods you think will change, and what items will be added, to how world generation mods will affect worlds in 1.8, such as BOP.

I HATE MODDING IN 1.8! Mostly the new rendering system. we have to do a lot more work. but I will get back into 1.8 modding when/if forge fixes the rendering system. Otherwise you have to create and edit 7 files to make 1 block, instead of the old create 1 edit 1. Other then it being more work. it is a way better rendering system..

That is my opinion.

But think of the VBO's. They helped me a lot with FPS and rendering.

Some improvements in 1.8 are game changing, with the "Cave culling algorithm" improving fps, "proper" use of discrete graphics also helping, and some multi-threading helping performance in general. All that said, 1.8 is terrible in every other respect. It runs like a one-legged dog who is too fat and I have yet to hear anything remotely positive about modding it. I hope Mojang releases a 1.8.4 or something that fixes most if not all of these things or modders fix things themselves since Mojang has not, and once that happens I will be with 1.8's side yelling full blast; but until then, I'm honestly not interested in moving to it

I will be amazed if modding ever moves to 1.8, considering how everything is getting backported by mods.

Block states are such a hassle to code with. Even though block metadata still exists and still is limited to 4 bits. So much bloat for storing so little information.

I think they will have to move to 1.8, if only to be in a better position for 1.9 and above. If they wait they will have to take into account having to make those changes in addition to the changes that will come with 1.9, all in one jump.

How many mod devs who said they would skip 1.6 and wait for 1.7, or skip 1.7 and wait for 1.8 are still active? I don't have a count...

Don't be surprised if modding stops at 1.7 maybe even permanently or at least until the so called mod api surfaces.

It's a pretty major hassle and for me personally, there's no actual incentive to move up at this time.

Probably not permanently, some mod authors are moving to 1.8.
NotEnoughMods lists over 100 mods for 1.8, but most of them are small. Rendering is still causing headaches for many.
