Not the most efficient way.

But the MFR mining laser creates random ores form the oredic. So if you have nether ores installed you will some times get those. Most of those tossed in some of the TE machines gives you the base ore and a chance to also get netherack. Like I said not really efficient but its away.

Of course one might ask why not just grab a few billion form the nether?

that will take a loooooooong time. More so if you just keep walking since in effect the nether is endless.

You can get literary around 30k from one 16x16 chunk in some more dense areas of the nether.

Still possible :p just thinking of everything! :D

AFAIK, nothing gives truly renewable netherrack and in recent 1.5.* packs Netherrack is MUCH less common. This is probably for the best.

Interestingly, MFR gives renewable soul sand.

Oh that's interesting since soul sand can be centrifuged into oil

There is around about 500 quadrillion blocks in the Nether to mine. You really don't need to worry about a renewable source for it.

Just to put that into perspective: If you have 500 people on your server, and they mined Netherrack once every second 24/7, it would take about 32 million YEARS to mine out the nether.

Heck, even if you got every single person on the entire planet to do absolutely nothing but mine netherrack, it would still take about 2.2 years to clear it out.

Not infinite mind you ( computers aren't capable of infinities ), but for all intents and purposes it is. Since it's so easy to get the netherrack itself, you don't need to bother building anything else.

When people ask for a renewable way to get 'x resource' I think the issue is not depleting the overworld/nether of said resource. Yes, most resources in minecraft are for all intents and purposes infinite, but if somebody needs a vast amount of something, they likely don't want to spend days/weeks/months? harvesting it. What they want is an automated way to continually get more and more of it.

For netherrack the best way to accomplish this I think is a frame quarry (like the one Direwolf built) in the Nether or in a Mystcraft Hell Biome age.

If you're playing on 1.5 where there's no RP2, you could just use regular quarries. A bit more manual, but it'll do the job nicely.

Have you ever looked at a mod and just thought "Holy heavens this guy, this guy that made this mod he's shoot-me-dead amazing."

Also, yeah. I never really see Netherrack anymore. Just HeatSand and Infernal Soil or whatever it is.

Doesn't xeno's reliquary give infinite netherrack? It lets you craft 17 netherrack with 1 netherrack and 1 redstone, and of course the tome of alkahest, which is not used in the process. Redstone can easily be made infinite using a witch farm

I wondered if I was too vague with the last line in my post.

For most circumstances, you are correct. However, netherrack is so insanely common, it would take more time to set up and run an automated mining method than it would to get an extremely large supply by hand. You don't have to search for it, or smelt it. You just hack away and go home with your spoils.

Well, setting up a standard size quarry is pretty fast...so you could also go that route if you don't mind pumping it full of power instead of hand mining for a few mins.

The overworld is 10 million from each direction from 0 0.
The height limit is half of the over world (The nether can be build on on top of the bedrock ceiling, but it's only set to go up to the old overworld hight limit) and is 1/8 the size, so 1250000 blocks from 0 0. So let's say all Nether was netherrack, and full of it in every spot possible, there would be 160 000 000 blocks of Netherrack. So, don't worry about running out any time soon.

What do you need with renewable netherack?

Also the heat sand is going to make a pretty nice flooring option for my evil fortress

OK so we get back to the OT or at least the spirit of the OT as this could be an interesting thought experiment.

Ok say your Server Admin has banned all travel out of the overwold on pain of Ban. No Nether, No End, No TF, No Mystcrft, No DimDoor..... you get the idea. Overworld only.

So hypothetically how would you go about getting the Netherack? Bonus if we can find a realable way to get the other off world matirals too.
