Well, from the limited amount that I've seen (partially because I was away, and partially because I just wasn't that interested), they're adding a few new biomes, which I don't really have an issue with. I'd be interested to see whether they add new blocks, or colour ones according to biomes. Minecraft thus far has tended to make the landscape out of the same few blocks (with the exception of mycelium), and colour them according to biome, so it'll be interesting to see how it's done in comparison to the common biome mods.

They're also adding meta-biomes, to try and prevent things like icy plains spawning next to deserts, which is fair enough. Although it'll be a bit infuriating (if you spawn in an arctic meta-biome), I'm in favour of it.

Personally, I don't see the problem.

Aha, so basically: a terrain generator rework.

Looking good:
- Clay canyon biome. Seems like it has a layered look of colors reminiscent of the Grand Canyon. Haven't seen anything quite like it in any mod.
- Biome neighbors matter. No more triangle meetings between artic, desert and jungle in the same chunk.
- Finally a fix for the terrain lighting bugs (black smudges that only disappear when you walk into them).

Disappointing:
- No word about terrain generation over y=128 still... want more terrain height!
- Where's the render engine rework that was scheduled for 1.5 but hasn't arrived yet?

Overall neat, though it feels they could have used the opportunity to do more.

I can kinda see what the OP is saying, I'm not a huge fan of this either as this will mean any world between now and when they release the patch with those biomes won't have those new biomes (or at least not close to where your base is).

You can't blame them for "copying" though. Mojang added biomes in the first place and all biome mods after that pretty much mimic real life biomes (with some fantasy biomes thrown in for fun). You can't blame Mojang for also looking at real world biomes for inspiration.

Though tbh I wouldn't worry about it. Unless those biomes get really unique features (eg cool materials you can only get there) I'm sure our BoP biomes will be prettier and more enjoyable.

I think the point of the Clay Canyon one is to add an easy way to get hardened clay, but this makes no odds if the BoP/XBXL guys make their own versions.

I'm going to say the same thing I said prior to 1.5, it's actually what's happening underneath which is important. Each new version makes Minecraft a more stable game and cleans up the code, bringing us one step closer to the fabled Mod API. They introduce new things (such as new Biomes, carpets, redstone mechanics - to quote some of the upcoming and previous features of updates) because otherwise people would complain "Why am I updating when there is nothing new?". Remember Minecraft is a completed and released game as far as Mojang are concerned, for most companies that would mean wiping their hands of it and starting on the next game, we're just lucky they are continuing to update it.

I know I've seen a biome with a lot of clay in BoP (it looks similar to what Mojang has here, a brown-ish surface with Clay just beneath it). In EBXL I believe Redrock can be turned into Clay by adding a water bucket.
So I'm pretty sure both BoP and EBXL already have biomes with lots of Clay.

Respectfully, I would add that it makes odds to people who play vanilla minecraft and mojang themselves.

It would take some serious imagination for the small team at Mojang to compete with the current pace of creativity we see in the army of modders. (Of course, it goes without saying that the initial creative spark is theirs). I will admit that I am more excited about upcoming additions in modded content, to the point where I barely even consider 1.7 updates but overall I am quite excited about what is in store, particularly the better biome transitions and lighting fixes. We spoiled Feed the Beast members might have access to excellent Biome mods that make what Mojang add in the Biome department seem small by comparison, but the underlying work should be a benefit to modded and vanilla both.

I don't really care much about the new biomes as I've added all the additional biomes I really want in my own mod (although, they do look nice). But I am very excited about the meta biomes. It's a feature that minecraft has badly needed since snow biomes were re-introduced back in beta 1.9.

Somewhere on the internet
If anyone complains about Mojang stealing ideas from mods, or adding new biomes, just remember the following

1) Mojang created minecraft, they can do whatever they want with it. It's also entirely because of them that said modders have their own modding canvas
2) Almost everything in minecraft is in some sort of mod
3) New worldgen has been in almost every single minecraft update, and adding some sort of retrogen would probably break worlds. It also appears that there's no new resources in these biomes, so unless you wanted to build in these biomes (where you'd be better off just starting a new world anyway) it's all OK
4) After almost every single minecraft update modded worlds break

This is awesome. Whatever they got to do to avoid doing anything with API... once again. Or am I wrong and the 1.6 launcher was their solution.

It's funny, that very thing happened in a server I play on :p

I'm liking the look of that new (redwood?) biome! The needle covered grass looks great, and the mossy cobble boulders look cool, and are useful as well.

I'm actually happy that Mojang is still updating the game, adding content without charging the players additional fees. Plus, there are still players who are strictly against playing with mods, so the content updates are pretty good in my eyes for those players.

Maybe. I hope not. I'm just unhappy because they don't get new Ideas.

Le sigh. They haven't gotten new ideas for a long time. The only reason they're doing this is to shut up the "OLD MINECRAFZ TRAN GENRATION EEEZ BETURR!" people. In my opinion they should all just add the modding api already so that we can all just live in our own little shadow realm of mods.
