I am so used to machines and tech mods that I'd never really taken the time to understand any of the magic packs. This looks designed to ease me into it and as a bonus it has tedium-free mining due to the endless caves (always more fun than staircase mining). There are not yet any YouTube guides except for the cave mod itself (which looks really cool, since I tend to make underground bases anyway). I am trying to commit to it more this time (I was confused on Hubris) to learn magic so hopefully I will finally know what the magic mods can do, since many people have said a lot of spells are on par with tech mods.

As much as I am enjoying this modpack, I would not consider it a good start to 'ease you into' magic mods. I would highly recommend Agrarian Skies or Magic Farm (any of them, although 3 is harder) as a better introduction to mods like Thaumcraft, Botania, and Ars Magica 2 (which are the big endgame powerful magic mods). You will be fighting for your life pretty constantly in this modpack and if you're constantly reading manuals you are likely to be fragged hard by hostiles while you're trying to figure out which end of the wand gets the lightning. :)

Both Hazzor and I have been making "Let's Play" videos on Youtube. Hazzor is sticking to a somewhat earlier (I think 1.02) version while I'm updating constantly (although I have only restarted for the big 1.10 epic siege mobs release, my worldgen remains the same otherwise). You can find his if you search for 'banished' and 'Hazzor' and mine are under 'banished the electric cake' (having "electric" in my name means I get a lot more ads stuck in searches for me. :6 Stupid youtube...).

I would also recommend PurpleMentat's videos on Botania and Thaumcraft. I still need to find a good Ars Magica 2 tute...

Personally some of the spells that you can make with AM2 are more useful than the tech mods. Plus the only tech I know of that can do more than double output is mekanism and thaumcraft makes tripling ores fairly easy once you get a bit of obsidian (a joke in this pack kill a few phantoms) and nether brick (find a doom like dungeon or hell biome that naturally spawns in the cave world). Granted the thaumcraft version takes a bit of research and a gold wand at least.

I guess you are right; the first mob was the reaper and the second which came out as soon as I hit a block of stone was a mountain mob 70 HP. Lost all my stuff immediately spawned not anywhere near there. Game over.

I disabled the epic siege mod and have actually been enjoying this pack quite well after that (you can finally build a base that way!). Sorry about my judgement earlier, as I believe I repeatedly had some really bad starts. This pack suffers far more from the RNG monster than most out there.

Quick question though, I'm starting to get held back by quests needing items which have clay in their recipes, and I can't seem to be able to find clay blocks anywhere, and can't find any recipes to make it. I even made a minium stone thinking it would transmute blocks in world, and apparently this EE3 version doesn't have that (or it's disabled). If it's this hard to find in my world, perhaps you could add a dark power turn-in for a clay block?

Edit: crap I just remembered botania has a clay flower. Guess I need to get going with that.

Hope you give it another try, I know how bad it can be if you die before getting the bed down, you can do a few quests before going through the portal, you get a pick and you only need a few cobble, I think there are 2 quests in survival that can be completed and couple in dark matter, then you can put the bed down as soon as you get through the portal and set your spawn.
It is a hard pack, especially till you get armour and a good weapon, makes you think about good defence for a change :P

Clay - there is the clayconia flower from botania and I'm glad you decided to try again Delerium

Guys, can anyone let me know what's the difference if I disable the epic siege mod? I like this pack as it got good progression, but it's kinda too frustrating to me as I'm new to magic mods (except botania coz of regrowth).

I don't want to miss out important stuff if I disable epic siege but I want to play this pack :(

from what I can tell, it only disables the special mobs that are capable of tunneling through blocks to get to you. Once you disable it, you play more like traditional minecraft where your base is relatively safe from breach. There's still plenty that can kill you in your base though like from lycanite's mobs there are specters and such that go through walls, but they aren't super hard or common, mainly just annoying.. The main reason I disabled epic siege mobs is because I wanted a long term home base to build up and store stuff without worrying about it all getting blown up.

I can survive pretty well before epic siege mod...guess I'll try another run without that and see how it goes..

I think it was mentioned earlier in how to find clay but other than botania i think the other way is to find harden clay and quarry and mine around it, seems to spawn clay naturally but the harden clay is covering it up.

Is there no bedrock? I mine until the lowest floor then floor through the void and back to portal everything...Weird

you were using quarry spell? could be a bug that wasn't intended but haven't gotten myself down to bottom layer yet. Anyone else able to use the accelerated growth spell to make grass? i'm below the dirt and casting the spell underneath it or am i suppose go another block down?

I'm using the quarry spell (btw the quarry spell only digs 3 blocks down?), does it matter if i'm using quarry or not?

The cave world has alternate dimensions that I have blocked off, it just sends you back to spawn when you try to enter one.

Drastic having trouble with grass trying to get some to move or grow some with the accelerated growth but either i'm reading it wrong or is the chance for grass super lower?

You need to be one block below the layer or standing on the same level as the block you cast it on, the growth spell is weird

so i have the lay of dirt than place a block below that and set the spell on the block i set below the top dirt? Should seem like this

Dirt top layer -----
block + spell -Block with spell ---

Edit: does the dirt have to be a certain amount? or would a 4x4 patch be good enough?

It is as if you are about to jump up some blocks except you don't jump, you just face that layer and cast it one block from standing on that layer

ok i got it now thanks for the help was very confused since i need a big patch of grass to get red and yellow flowers for botania.
