I don't suppose there's a regular time the team is aiming at? I'm torn between waiting patiently like an adult and indulging my inner child by going straight to the test build (which is probably unwise).
Unless something happens that delays release, the release will likely be exactly the same as the current test build. All they have to do is set it to "recommended".

Last time I jumped into a test build before it was recommended, it "broke" my world save once I updated from the test version of that build to the recommended version. There was a weird ID conflict with an item in forestry that no longer existed- it was listed as "unknown name" in the crash log. I couldn't find the ID in question in any of forestry's config files. I fiddled with various settings for a few hours trying to fix it, then gave up and started a new world.

It wasn't a huge deal, but it also wasn't an experience I'd care to repeat.

You should think about installing either a mod-level backup solution like Forge Backup (http://www.minecraftforge.net/forum/index.php?topic=4606.0) or doing a manual backup before every update (and, if possible, every week or even every day) to keep from having this happen after you've started to really get deep into a single world.

~~~
I am extremely amused by the generally negative outlook on this update most people are having as I'd say this looks like an extremely awesome update which removes the need to grind ages endlessly so long as you don't mind looking around for loot/villagers, which is a whole lot more fun. Ah well, so it goes.
Flat tends to start the terrain at 128.
That means a lot of wasted BC power on a Quarry to get to the good stuff (Diamond level).
Stick with normal (height of 50-80) or Cave World + Caves + Ravines (Cave world is just Flat with a hollow center). Keep in mind, I think in the TE file very few ores spawn above 80-90. So 30 blocks or 1/4 of what you mine is largely wasted power (you'll get some iron and coal, about it).
good for apatite I guess...
I used to be religious about doing that, until FTB made me lazy by enveloping me in the warm lap of luxury. Then I had a problem with FTB updates, and now I'm religious about it again. I make a point of backing up the entire instance with MultiMC after each gaming session once more.
The DW20 5.1.0 they have now doesn't launch on mac and has configs disabling an entire mod. So I suspect that unless they violate the "only on mondays" policy they'll have to push it to next week.
Yeah, that was what I was doing for a while until I finally found a good automated backup solution which keeps me from having to do that (and sends an in-game message to all OPs so I can confirm it is actually backing up). It is great for servers, too, as it will only back up when players are on (or have been online since the last backup was taken). But either way, yeah, backups are pretty much required when dealing with this many modifications and the possibility of issues cropping up, such as the MystCraft/Modular Power Suit conflict, etc.
Let Katrinya's story be a lesson to the rest of you: Back up your stuff!
Ah, apatite. Now even more the red-headed stepchild of the ores (xychorium you're safe.... for now).
It was useless before, but now with the new farms mandating fertilizer / apatite, it's even more useless as people are just turning to Steve's Carts.
But yes, it "only generates above 60 height".
Do tell me how to get advanced machine blocks without carbon plates, which require both the macerator(I suppose you could also use the pulveriser) and compressor.[DOUBLEPOST=1361143672][/DOUBLEPOST]
now that gives me an idea.... pistons that activate at night (RP2 light sensor) to push the dirt block into place
or MFFS...
Ah well, so it goes.
Well, they are taking a simple-ish concept many people like and are used to, and are making it extremely more complex than it used to be.
Not to mention people who have a lot of their world near their base already "explored" are going to have to go really far away for a chance to find a place with a page that may or may not be useful, then repeat that multiple amounts of times (Because its quite unlikely you'll get the pages you want on the first go.) to be able to make a single nice, stable age.
That and/ or having to just "farm" villagers, which is just not as fun as age surfing.(To me at least, don't know about others.)
Opposed to the simple concept of "Age surfing" which was fun on its own way as well, due to its random, yet effective results. Are you gonna spawn on a cool, useful world, or are you gonna spawn in an exploding world engulfed in flames? Who knows!
Not saying the new version is "bad" or worse on its own, but compared to what people were used to, its difficult to adjust in a snap, since really people had little to no time to adjust for this.
(Maybe if he had gradually introduced the changes, it may have been recieved better?)
But I wouldn't worry too much about it, as time goes on and people make new worlds and start getting more used to it, I imagine people are gonna start liking it more, its just about giving it some time.
