So having only really started to get the hang of the progression aspect of ftb, and having, for really only the first time, really started from scratch in a world with resource collection and base building, I've realized that my base is a bit ...badly located. I've decided that at this point (pretty early in the game, still), simply starting in a new world is probably the best option. I've just got a simple steam engine and solar-panels setup on my IC2 and TE workshops, and while I've got some turtles tunneling around so I can follow after and mine out the goodies, I really don't have any large-scale mining/sorting/storage system yet. However, thinking about it, if I'd played for even just another couple of days, I might be entrenched enough in the tech-tree that re-doing a week of "start from scratch" is less attractive. So my question, I guess, is "so...moving a base?"

1) what's your "cut off" point for when you're invested enough in your world that re-starting from a better location is not an option for you, personally?"

2) how do you move, if you're one who has a habit of moving your base or re-building in a new location periodically? Ender chests? ME drives? Portal guns?

3) somewhat connected to question 1, I suppose, at what benchmark do you consider yourself to no longer be in "early" game? Magma pumps and engines? Solar panels? Your first uu-matter? And what is your first "goal" for your base that, upon reaching it, you say "ahh, *now* it's a base!"

1) Never. A new base is always an option. I usually have 3-4 of them by the time we switch to a new world. What I find myself doing is starting satellite bases for various activities and then eventually moving most of my main base to a satellite base I like better for some reason. My final base is usually a 2-4 chunk tower from 0-250ish in a void age.

2) ME drives, force-wrenched chests. With the mods we have now moving is trivial. It isn't like the old days where you could spend days moving your router/tube fed walls of barrels from one place to another.

3) Mid-game is where I stop doing things because I feel like I need something. Once I start building stuff just for the hell of it I'm in mid-game, trying out a bunch of medium projects before gearing up for some end-of-world megaprojects.

If I hate the surroundings I will restart or move, typically the latter, no matter the progress.

In the past I've used ME Drives, Portals, and simply walking with full inventories + bags

Definitely not UUM, because I tend to play with GT. First goal = building a base :p. If I believed in end game and early game I guess I would consider getting my first full set of basic IC2 machines when I am no longer in early game.

2) Chestception, fill a chest, force wrench it, put it inside another chest - repeat as many times as you like and carry everything in a single chest.

Just ....... don't lose it!!

Never. I've seen myself nuke entire 'end game' bases, delete region files etc etc just because I'm bored of it. I commonly build a starter base, tech up and start up automining\crafting\etc then run off and find someplace that looks cool to build in (Even if I have to travel tens of thousands of blocks to do so. Ocean gen, I'm looking at you ¬¬)

2) how do you move, if you're one who has a habit of moving your base or re-building in a new location periodically? Ender chests? ME drives? Portal guns?

Normally I have a 'fresh start kit' sitting in a chest I can grab. Mostly this consists of an ME controller, ME drive, some form of ore doubling machine, and some engines\generators. Then I just chuck some stuff I think I need on a couple of ME storage disks and set off into the sunset...

I don't really divide my game into stages like that, it doesn't matter to me where I am in various tech\magic trees, if I think up a project then I'll start working on it, regardless of what I have available, machines etc. Generally I'm quite picky about where I build, so right from the start it's already got that 'its a base' feeling

If you're playing with unleashed/with dartcraft people have already mentioned using the force wrench, you can actually condense whole bases into a single item and do the unpacking later when you've got a more scenic location. It's *never* worth deleting imo.

I build a small shack or dig into the side of a hill to make my first base while I accumulate enough resources for my "project" or "final base" I consider myself out of the early game when I can pop ores in a chest and have ingots come out the other end.

I'd be less inclined to move and more inclined to set up a teleportation network of some sort. Dump down chunk/spot loaders as need be, ultimately the only thing that matters about the area your "main" base exists in is whether you like it.

When you can pop all your items in to a few drives, moving is easy, all you have to do is build the new base.
That's why i personally think restarting for another location is meaningless but exploring the current world and build a new base and then move to it is the way to go :p

For me, the "early game" ends when I set up completely automatic power generation - when I'm no longer counting coal for the generator or steam engines. And I'd further class "end-game" as that point where my automation can craft more of itself (AE), which really starts to accelerate my tech advancement.

I'll move when I don't like the location, find a better one, or simply get bored with it. I prefer my main base be in a scenic location and be open. I'm not a fan of underground main bases and void ages. However, farms, auto-processing, bee areas, etc.,,. can be anywhere.

As for early, mid, and late-game:

Early : Struggling for power, basic resources, and decent tools/armor and have just started long-tail stuff like Thaum and bees
Mid : Have stable but not near-infinite power, some resources auto-generated, good tools/armor, and are well into long-tail research activities like Thaum and Bees
Late : Near-infinite resources and power and have completed most of Thaum research and most of the lines of bees I'm after

In late game, I have the resources and tools at my disposal to build big projects and try wacky stuff.

In previous worlds, a well-powered quarry, MFR laser, and/or UU-matter maker would signal a transition point. In this world, I'm forgoing all of those and using bees for auto-resources. Since each bee line has to be researched and put into production, progress is more linear and less of a step function. Have honey, lava, string, iron, gold, and uranium via bees as of this writing. String is mainly for frames ;-)

In FTB, moving is not an issue with AppEng, EnderStorage, DartCraft, etc.

So, Just Do It.
