OK, this is what I came up with:

Basically, the bridge extends for 8 seconds and then automatically retracts. I decided to use your suggestion, Ako_the_builder, for an elevator in my base (minus the auto retraction) and TangentialThreat's suggestion for the bridge. I hooked up to that a Toggle Latch wired to an 8 second Timer with repeaters to stop the flow for an automatic bridge using the Camo Gate.

That looks like it might work... My knowledge of what redpower gates do is veeeeeery limited so half that stuff just confuzzles my brain.
