What is your main source of power?

  • Lava (in any form of generator)

  • Solar

  • Coal (mined)

  • Tree farm based

  • Other farm based

After many modpacks andany worlds where I intended to use oil, and never did, I now start with smeltery to make sag mill and alloy smelter, loot a hobbyists steam engine from village, then make oil refinery to use oil in thermal expansion dynamos. I'll eventually make a big reactor.

How on earth did you automate nether starts?!? You can do that?!?
Yes, Direwolf20 did that in his Let's Play :D
You can spawn the Wither with e.g. formation planes and let him drop down into a protected room where he gets killed by some remote method.
To explain how I did it:
Farm wither skulls with a draconic evolution stabilized spawner and upgraded to tier 3.
Have a turtle deploy soul sand and wither skulls in a 5x5x6 blocks big room of warded blocks from thaumcraft. There's one block missing in one corner, so the turtle can safely leave the room.
(Note: For the room obsidian also works, since the blast when the wither is created does not destroy obsidian.)
Insta-kill the wither with a draconic evolution grinder. Loot inside the room is collected via a hopperhoc (or whatever it's called) from botania.

I get the most power from my fairly big ReactorCraft reactor, which has 32 cores I believe, but I find that I often have no need for that giant amount of power all of the time. I don't leave my bigger power draws on 24/7 because I simply have no reason to plus I'd run out of stuff quickly. I only ever turn on my steam turbines from the reactor when I need to use a ton of power for extractors/grinders/electrolizers/whatnot.

Other than my ReC reactor, I got a fairly standard big reactor covering all the costs of maintaining all the automation and EIO/TE/Mek machines in my base... at a surplus of power too. Yellorium production is automated so this will theoretically never ever shut off unless my automation breaks and I don't notice for the 16k yellorium ingots I have in my ME system. In addition, I have a row of 8 gas turbine from RoC (jet fuel is also automated). I really just built it for the fun of hearing multiple turbines spin up, but this can supply me with enough power to run all of my bigger power draws in the event that I don't want ReC scale of power, but need more than my Big Reactor can give me. I also have some EU furnace generators attempting to use my massive surplus of coal, but I generate coal at much faster rates than I use it.

I also have more eco-friendly ways of obtaining power. Granted I get the least out of these, the benefit of having passive power is too good to pass on in the case that something else fails (which honestly is impossible but I'm way too cautious anyway). I got 5 Mek wind turbines at max elevation generating a pretty decent amount of RF and I got 20 64Rf/t solar panels from SolarFlux in a RFTools dimension that has no weather and is always daytime.

And if that wasn't enough, I plan on creating 2 more reactors for ReactorCraft, one of which will be a fusion reactor.
1) How are you generating that much coal? I could understand charcoal since tree farms are really useful, but coal?!
2) How are you automating yellorium production?

Isn't it a pain to always go and find oil deposits and pipe the oil back?

A friend on our server didn't believe you could create substantial power from a mob farm. I set out to prove him wrong. Once cursed earth was obtained, we have never wanted for power. Since then, I have separated the mobs into individual spawning rooms with spawners on drawbridge deployed cursed earth.

1. Mob Essence and gunpowder are pumped into TE Reactant Dynamos.
2. Redstone is Magma Crucibled and run to XU Heated Redstone Generators.
3. Potions are placed in a XU Potion Generator.
4. Blaze rods are sent to Railcraft Boilers (which feed steam into a BR Turbine)
5. Enchanted gear is sent to TE Enervation Dynamos.
6. Sticks are sent to low drain remote systems to be burned in XU Survivalist Generators.
7. Ender pearls go into XU Ender Generators.
8. Working on an EIO Zombie Generator setup soon.
9. Bones, sulfer, and sticks get sent to a friend who farms to be made into Industrial Fertilizer for his MFR Fertilizers. He uses those crops for a BioFuel->Liquid Firebox Boiler->Turbine setup.

The problem isn't how to create massive amounts of RF. The problem is finding creative things (read: not laser drills) to spend that power on.

Fun Challenge: Do all of that, but don't use any XU generators.
About the things to use them on... Uh... Moar lazor drilz? Or at least, more laser drills and then automate sorting, processing, and storage of the stuff. Upgrade whatever processing machines you use to full. You could also get Enhanced Portals and then just make a giant portal network and leave it on all the time.
Its a fun early game solution. 1 good geyser lasts a long time. I pipe if its close enough, otherwise, I use a pair of ender tanks.
Plus, with ender tanks, you can move it more easily.

My method:

Furnace generator (XU)=> Lava (XU)=> BR (BR)=> Fission reactor (ReC)
And if I feel like it, fusion reactor

Did you just tell ANYBODY to NOT use XU Generators? Monster....

I'm currently powering my entire base in Pathfinder off a single XU Survivalist Generator, using manually-mined coal. I tried the Stirling Generator from EnderIO, but it's terribly inefficient. I recently got a QED and will soon upgrade to an 8x Survivalist Generator.

If I ever need more than 40 RF/t, I'll probably make an RFTools dimension with oceans of EnderIO rocket fuel and burn that. I'll probably use an XU Ender-Thermic Pump powered by a Tesseract to pump it and get it to my base.

More than 40 RF/t? That's hardly anything!

Quick question, if I break a yellorium fuel rod in reactor that still has some fuel in it, will the fuel be retained or lost?
I think the fuel stays there until the last block of the reactor is mined, or at least until the last fuel rod is mined, provided you retrieved all the ingots first.

Most of my builds run on what I dub "Genocide Engines". I set up some method of spawning wither skeletons and then use the coal to fuel things.

My latest playthrough is the first time I've tried out Big Reactors, so my whole base is running off of a big reactor instead. I use so little power that it only needs to run 1% of the time on half control rods. I'm a little confused as to what everyone's burning their RF on to need anything more powerful than that.
