Off topic here, but if you are a "lifelong gamer" you are far from the oldest silverback ape in this jungle... Some of us were already in high school when the first Magnavox Odyssey home videogame was offered and "Tank" first appeared in the local bowling alley. :D

I was programming before there was such a thing as a "video monitor", we had to play "Star Trek" or "Hunt the Wumpus" with a paper printer for output, one sloooow line at a time. LOL That's old, altho I never had to use punch cards in trays, by then we did at least have magnetic tape for data storage. :)

I do certainly hope I'm wrong about MS and the decline of Minecraft. It's pretty much the kind of video game I always hoped for, relatively non-violent and creative, cooperative open-world. It would be a shame to see it all end, but what game that I loved didn't end eventually? Life goes on I suppose.

I like FTB Ultimate, but the magic and technology stuff never went well together.
If you're like me and you're not really interested in the magic stuff like Thaumcraft, you still have to live with flux causing lightning strikes at your base making charged creepers or killing your animals.
Even in the Monster modpack, those crystal things you find in caves take it too far because the constant dinging sounds get so freakin' annoying when caving. The combo of tech and magic just isn't my cuppa tea.

Paper tape for storage on a Teletype Model ASR-33 here...

We're not that far apart, I guess :D

Agreed. Thankfully, the beauty of FTB is that we are able to "Edit Modpack" and remove any such mod that we don't enjoy, without consequence.

it was definitely in ultimate, and those blocks were definitely in it. 1.4.7 was the only version we got xycraft iirc.

as for the "official' wiki, which one are you looking at? this one?
Actually, I always thought this was the FTB Wiki for Ultimate, at least it's where I got all my information. Its page on XYCraft doesn't even mention any features apart from decorations: http://feed-the-beast.wikia.com/wiki/XyCraft

Oh, wait... it appears it does. The Wiki is just poorly structured, not linking to the Soil in any XYCraft-related articles. My mistake.

Anyway, it still doesn't excuse Quartz Crystals.

Yes I know FTB Ultimate will 99.99% not make a comeback but what if it does? I mean it was a great modpack and the first one i ever played that worked. It is also what taught me pretty much everything I know about mods. So I think there should be like a FTB Ultimate 2 modpack with all the mods the older version had but up to date and in 1.7.10 (or as high as it can get). Also just replace redpower with project: red, I mean who uses redpower? It's basically saying "Hi, I'm a old mod no one uses and will never make a comeback!". ALSO ABSOLUTELY NO GREGTECH. That mod ruined my experience.
Read my signature, the first link (The 95 Pack) was originally based off of Ultimate, but it now has a lot of new mods in it too; Blood Magic, Galacticraft, Mekanism, Furniture Mod. I will be updating it to 1.7.10 soon too, so you will have an Ultimate-esc pack :) Also I will be doing a GT and None-GT version with 1.7.10 :p

And also pointless stuff? GeoStrata, what a PITA... All the different stone stuff... POINTLESS! The crystals are cool, but again, pretty useless as you can't harvest them. Engineers' Toolbox? What's the point? Lycanite's Mobs URRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG. Mariculture, it's like bee breeding BUT WORSE... I could go on, but I won't :p
In short FTB Ultimate (if all the mods were 1.6 compat.) = Monster, but with less of the annoying mods

You can harvest them with Silk touch though, and as a builder I love all those different types of stone, and like seeing new mobs in the game. Also I happen to be one of those people that like the bees/fish

I love bees... but fishing in general = boring, fishing in minecraft = OH GOD WHY! :p
And the Lycanite mobs look cool... but when you spawn on a server, at night, and get a**e r***d by the lycanite mobs it's just WHY! If I wanted to die upon entering a world I woulda played BnB :p
And don't get me wrong, the stones can be good for building... BUT WHEN MINING  OMG! I hate it when mining. Inventory fillers, that is all they are. It's like when I am not a massive fan of the new "stones" in vanilla... they just take up space, but you don't want to toss them, as they are gonna be useful for you builds later on.

Luckily, Reika has separated the stone types and the crystals into separate mods in 1.7. Crystals are in Chromaticraft. Stone in Geostrata.

I still don't know how I feel about the mod(s)... they don't really have an impact on how any of the other mods play, which is why you play a mod pack... IC2 needs a lot of iron? Magical crops; Grow your iron! Tools aren't that good? Tinkers construct, but wait there's more... don't like your tools breaking and having to repair them, or wait for them to slowly repair using moss? Thermal Expansion adds Flux/IC2 adds electric... Stuff like that...
What does Geostrata (and chromaticraft) do? Oh hey, look... some stone... I can build with that... Oh cool, this crystal will give me jump boost when I'm REALLY close to it... that's useful.
Yes, I realize a good crystal like the regen/saturation one COULD be useful when it comes to Blood Magic... but really, when there are alternatives, like that flower thing from Botania (not really used the mod, can you tell?) then even that one SMALL thing Chromicraft/Geostrata COULD help with, is pointless

Having played Ultimate as my first FTB experience, and having played a lot of the modpacks since then, I have to say that (in my humble opinion) FTB Ultimate WITH GREGTECH will always be the best FTB modpack. And having Gregtech in the modpack is literally the reason why it is the Ultimate modpack. There hasn't been nearly so good a modpack since the Ultimate modpack.

Depends upon your definition of 'FTB modpack'. If you broaden it to include 3rd-party packs - many of which are made by the FTB staff directly - there's 2 or 3 packs that I've personally liked better than Ultimate, (namely MagicFarm2 and InfiTech 1 and 2) and I definitely haven't had the time to play all the packs I've wanted to. Still need/want to try BnB and CL.

If you're curious, spend some time sans rose-colored glasses in Third-Party Modpacks --> Public Packs Forum. IMHO, *this* is the where the FTB sweet spot has been for several months now.

Chromaticraft adds a rift that can be used to wirelessly transfer shaft power and possibly any other power/liquid, while tesseracts won't do shaft power. It also adds tile entity accelerators that won't lag your server out(glares at Dartcraft time torches) and a way to obtain the crystals that heal the ender dragon.

Dartcraft, one of those mods I have never used, and from what people tell me about the mod, I never will use :p

Also, the tile entity accelerators are crazy expensive and blacklist all Rotarycraft/Electricraft/ReactorCraft items, as well as all power gens from any mod.
